Servicecards, cashcards and Natwest Advantage Gold accounts, some advice please!

After years of trying to improve my credit rating after some defaults in Uni, i was invited into my Natwest branch to discuss my accoount. To cut a long story short i was eligible for the Advantage Gold, having prviously had a Step Account with Solo card.

I received a £100 overdraft, and my cheque book was sent in the post, heres where it gets tricky.

No card was sent so i went back into my branch a week later and they cancelled the card that had been issued and sent another. The next morning the postman delivered the card that had been cancelled the previous day:o It was a PURPLE Visa debit cheque guarantee(£100) card.

Two days later my new card came in the post , it was a BLUE Visa debit bit NO cheque guarantee:confused:

I went back to the branch and "the system" would not allow them to order me the purple service card, and i was told i would have to wait a few weeks/months to get a service card.

Noobaody could explain to me why i was given the PURPLE card to begin, but a week later only able to get the BLUE card.

NatWest

Blue Visa Debit = No Cheque Guarantee (Solo card replacement)
Purple Visa Debit = £100 or £250 Guarantee (Maestro replacement)

They asked if my credit rating had changed, but they are the only ones who have done a search recently, and nothing has changed in the week between me opening the account and getting the replacement card.

Could someone please explain to me the differnce between the two cards in terms of how it affects credit scoring, etc.
As basically the staff are telling me the cards are just the same and do the same job.

WHY NOT GIVE ME THE ORIGINAL CARD IF THAT IS THE CASE!!

there would have been no issue if i would have received the first service card in time and registered.

    thanks for the informative replies.

i'm actually taking advantage of the holiday insurance and mobile cover already.
Don't let that get in the way of your condescending smugness though.

I thought these forums are a community where we can share help and advice, is it all about "i'm cleverer than you now"
    Such as shame.

There is a possibility the orginal card was sent in error.

There is no difference between the cards really. The blue card type is full auth so retailers will check you have enough funds in your account before they process the transaction.

The purple cards give you the CG card function however thats being phased out very soon anyway. Both the debit facility on the blue and purple card still do the same job.

In relation to your credit file the 2 card types would have no effect on your credit score. The bank may have possibly credit scored you orginally when they upgraded your account.

i can't understand why i was issued one then given a different card as a replacement though.

they can't seem to explain either other than saying "there is no difference in the cards"

    It's not a major thing,

The card will work in almost all the same places, including the old roll over machines.
Why don't you see how you get on (unless you know you'll need pay at pump etc)

Guy's, the good old days are gone when you were given the gold laced debit card with the CG function and a huge overdraft and had the red carpet rolled out for you - the only difference in Visa Debit cards today is the authorization trigger which is programmed in to the card's chip.

Banks have already begun the cull on CG cards. The days of cash-slow with paper cheques are coming to and end, about time too as cheques do not have a place in our modern "electronic" society.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • I have just recd a replacement purple visa debit card - previously I had a maestro servicecard 100 which i could use to guarantee cheques. The new card has the 'servicecard 100' printed on it but doesn't have a hologram with the £100 sign which the maestro had. Does this mean that I can't guarantee cheques with the replacement visa card? No stating the obvious such as banks are phasing out/shops don't take cheques etc etc. I'm aware of that. It's jsut a query that if St Clair's about he might be able to answer? Staff I asked in NW branch (Brighton) weren't able to give me an answer.
I do sometimes still like to send a cheque in the post or use cg facility down the local curry house day before pay day .........
