I have a contract with Vodafone and dont currently have GPS access because I didnt want to pay the extra £5 a month. Is there a cheaper option? Is it possible to wangle it for free?

Don't know about other phones, but in Nokia, if you download full OVI maps, you won't pay anything just to find your location on map.

However, you do incur data charge, if you want turn-by-turn direction.

Unlike sat navs, mobile phones download map data realtime. So, it attracts network charge. That's why you need to install entire map data on phone first.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

I see. I was thinking about using Garmin or TomTom Mobile on it. It's a Nokia N78.

GPS is only chargeable if you download maps on the fly (as you go), when you'll be charged for the date you use.
With tomtom or garmin all the maps are in the install package so there's no downloading going on, therefore no charge. . .

    Hi Spaceboy,

I know that it has been a little while since you posted and I apologise for not being able to provide a more speedy response, but could you post an update letting us know whether you have managed to get the Garmin Mobile XT software working please?

If you haven't then we will look into what we can do to help you.

    Cheers,
