Cost of a removal company

Chaps - I'm after some rough estimates to put into my spreadsheet.

Chance we might be moving in the next 9 months, so want to do some research.

Last time was a first house, no chain either side, so we just took stuff up by a few cars in a few trips - no appliances or furniture to speak of, just posessions.

Now we have the full caboodle, applicances/furniture/sofas etc etc, so am thinking a removal company might be the way to go - so am after some costs that people have incurred.

It's to move 2 people from a 3 bed end terrace about 80 miles - any idea on cost - I'm guessing somewhere around 2k?

Probably better off ringing removal companies in your local area,as it varies from region to region.

Alternatively, hire a van for about 50 quid a day and do it yourself

If you can face it, it would be much cheaper to move it yourselves. My DH and I used to live nearly 600 miles apart and when I moved up to live with him, we were quoted nearly £6000 for removal companies (distance would have been a factor though lol). There was no way we could afford it as i had debt and he had not long been divorced and had nothing, so we hired a bedford luton on a one way rental and in total, including fuel, it cost us about £650.

I had to be ruthless though, my DH had no furnture of his own or kitchen appliances etc so we put bed, spare bed, fridge, freezer washing machine, cooker and all other essentials in the van and then stacked as much other stuff as we could. Anything that didn't fit was ditched!

If you only have to move 80 miles, you could easily do a couple of trips.

I recently moved 100 miles and I've got 4 kids, a large house and LOTS of stuff to shift about.

I was quoted between £600-£900. That said, its a lot more if you live down south. In the end, it cost me £650 including packing which is possibly the best £650 I've ever spent!

Think its worthwhile getting several actual quotes from local & national removals firms as it does seem to vary dependent on location. I've seen quotes where the removal firm cost virtually the same as vanhire, which surprised me! So wouldn't assume that removals firm is necessarily an expensive option, and they have also all the gear to protect your goods.

if you do use a small firm "man with van" type company, do check their insurances before committing all your worldly possessions to them.

Definately ring around, both nationals and locals, and also firms in the area you are moving to.

I moved 700 miles and it cost £1600 using a firm located where I moved to, Parents paid £3500 for the same journey using a national company

National wll be in the region of £1000 and local probably £500

Many charge on a per man per day basis so if you have a relatively small amount of stuff then getting them to pack can sometimes be no more expensive than not packing.

Last few moves I have done I have hired a Luton Box Van with tail lift and paid a few mates with beer and food after moving. Van was about £70 for 24hrs.

  • I've moved twice in last two years - 1st time about 75 miles, 2nd time about 150 miles. Both cost around £500 and both were very good, Just did a search on internet and then went with a local company (the national ones were expensive and a rip off IMO). We bought boxes from a website and tape and boxed everything up and labelled it. ON the day of moving they took it all out of one house and into the other - this is easier than getting mates to help and less stressful/physical too!
