Banks Threaten ATM Charges

I don't use cash machines mainly because of the fraud problems with scanners etc. However, it is a simple matter of just going into the bank and using your card to get a cash withdrawal. Simples!!:j0

So their own customers get free withdrawals elsewhere as well0 -

That's fine, but what if you want to withdraw money in the evening, or late weekends

One, of the Supreme Court justices suggested it, not the court as a whole. It wasn't a promise that any such action would be successful.
I think that if there really was much merit in the new argument, then the OFT would have used it before now.
Even MSE isn't holding out much hope. They are only rating people's chances of getting their charges refunded under the new ruse as between 10-20%. Compare this to the situation before yesterday's judgement when Martin Lewis was all but guaranteeing everyone a refund. If he and other consumer "champions" hadn't been so cocksure of winning, and encouraged so many people to put in claims, there wouldn't be so many disappointed people now.0 -
A barely related point but I thought I would bring it up as it really annoys me. Why (having an abbey account) am I charged for using santander ATMs abroad. It REALLY annoys me as its the same company essentially. GAH...anyways...rant over...0

We have got used to the idea that banking is free in this country.
Banking is free?????
Ok - so it costs the bank around £30 per year for the facilties you listed.
But I'm paying them close to £6000 per year in interest because I have a mortgage and a loan.
My bank makes a handsome profit from me, simply because I am a customer.
And that's why I'm against ATM charges.

When my National + Provincial BS cashcard was taken over by abbey in 96? they quickly introduced £1 charge for using other companies cash machines,I wrote (threatening to close the account) to them pointing out that the only abbey atm was inside Tesco,s which was not a 24 hour shop at that time and therefore did not have the 24/7 access to cash they had promised me.
I got a letter which excluded me from the charges,I closed the account the next year anyway and I know many more did as well before abbey reversed it,s policy.
This was all long before MSE etc therefore I would suggest that people power and at least the threat of account closures (and not just the cashcard ones) will be enough to ward off greedy banks ambitions in this direction.I have a deep burning indifference0 -
