Banks Threaten ATM Charges

  • Exactly, the tax payer owns a stake not a total 100% stake and that is a big difference.

This is a genuine question: I don't understand when people say "WE OWN THE BANKS...." I know tax payers money (which I am too) has gone into them but surely it's the same for NHS, the council..... - people don't go round saying "We own the NHS/ Council" so why about banks?

It is just the in thing to say it seems. So is that because certain banks have tax payer intervention they should not pay bonuses. They forget the people working for the bank also pay taxes and liekly pay more tax than the moaners and groaners do.

Ahh mate, Tesco is the British Consumers choice -

Without doubt Tescos is a great company - they have done a tremendous service for the general population of the country. Their entry into the banking market will be good thing for the consumer.

Why would Tesco operate any differently in retail banking than in retail? I'm sure their suppliers would beg to differ about them 'screwing people daily'.

I've only had a bank account in one other country; Australia. With that current account (National) there were charges for everything with the possible exception of POS payments. Every ATM withdrawal, balance check, counter transaction etc etc attracted a set charge. That's the way they seem to do things there and it seems it may be a direction we end up going in here.

Thats exactly what I want to see them do. They give their customers outstanding value for money and a wide choice of products

Sure they squeeze their suppliers. Nothing wrong with that.;)
  • You will find ASDA is cheaper than Tesco.

Maybe, but I don't want cheap I want value.;)
  • Tesco offers neither cheap or value. ASDA does both, they also have more stylish bags for life and a catchy jingle in their TV adverts.

its OUR money, and WE own the banks (most of them..),, perhaps we should charge THEM to pay our money in, as they are using it to make a nice profit right now..

first bank to start charging for atm withddrawls will surely fail within a week. i will make it my sole mission!

    Tongue in cheek mode on

Well if WE own them, maybe WE should lobby for higher bank charges so that WE get more back when they revert to the private sector. That is we should act like shareholders rather than customers.

Just as valid an argument I feel
  • I dont remember people back in the 70's banging on about how WE owned the Gas Board..
