None whatsoever. Times are hard, gym memberships are one of the first luxuries people let go, and gyms have always been hard to negotiate with when they're in the right.

If I were a gym manager, I'd be taking every subscription I could get and if that meant refusing a cancellation request, no matter how polite or assertive, I'd be doing it.

    doesn't mean I can't try
  • I used to use the gym a lot, paid my £55 a month then went to about 10 classes a week, plus the gym, plus the pool, spa etc.

I'm now living somewhere without a proper gym - a swim and a yoga class a week is more than my old gym was!

You chose it, now use it. Its not hard.
  • How did this all end up?

David Lloyd are quoting me £83.40 per month for single membership, they seem to really vary. It is a hard sell, and I thought the 'cooling off' perioid rule was precisely because of that 'hard sell' approach. Although, I perfectly understand that we have to stand by our buying decisions.

My mum always used to say, never buy or commit to anything long term or expensive without going away and thinking about it, or talking to your partner. I guess what she was saying, is always apply your own cooling off period. Many the time I'd have signed up for something that I changed my mind about after going home to think. It was good advise, and I always quote it to sales people - I never buy 'on the day', then they say you can only have the discount now, 'what a shame' but I've never been denied a discount when I've called back and said I'd purchase!

I'm trying to find gym membership right now, but without a 12 month contract, as our company keep making people redundant, so I can't make a 12 month commitment. Neither Esporta or DAvid Lloyd will budge on the 12 month deal.
  • Hmm, not heard of them, I'm in the Sutton Surrey area.
