I understand this router also has a firewall, so it sounds as if I am going to have enough protection with this and the Windows one.
    Correct. Perfectly adequete.

Anyway AVG 9 upgrade has caused so many problems next step is to uninstall it and downloan Microsoft Security Essentials.
Definately an option. I'd recommend either Avira or Avast. The former has better detection rates (only slightly), the latter has email scanning. I personally have Avira. Give this page a read:

Either way the AVG removal tool you want is here:

AVG was changing the firewall settings

I'd suggest resetting the firewall settings:

Don't bother with the renewal option. Its cheaper to buy the full product off of amazon, see here, and here.

My mum, recently had the same dilemma.I can't remember whether she went for Nrton Internet Security 2010, or Norton 360 2009, but it was a lot cheaper than upgrading.

I've done this too - so easy, just typed in the code. Hassle free, and £30 saved. Result!! Martin rocks!!

What is the difference between the two products - would it be advisable to go for the 360 ??
When you choose this route would I totally remove the Norton I have on at the moment before installing new one ??

I dont know why people buy security the free ones are just as good.

    Avira
    Avast
    MSE
    MalwareBytes
    Superantispyware
    Windows Firewall
    PCTools Firewall
    Outpost firewall
    Winpatrol
    Threatfire

Ample amount of good free software, no need to pay. (ps dont use all the above at the same time).

Well I've taken off AVG 9 (paid version) as mentioned above and what a difference. Everything has speeded up, but more importantly I am able to shut down the computer every time and I am not receiving occasional messages about the firewall being changed.

I now have: Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows own firewall, and have uninstalled Spybot as I heard it could also cause problems and have downloaded the free version of Ad-Aware (it seems this is a new improved version). My banking is also covered by Rapport which came as a download from the bank.

Thanks for all the info and help.
  • Personally I'd always buy a full security suite if it's a "general use" computer. The free programs often require some degree of user interaction to update or authorise, which is fine if everyone using the computer knows what they are doing but sometimes younger or inexperienced users don't know how to update, block threats etc.
Also the free suites are often either AntiVirus or Firewall so you need to install two programs and monitor them.

There are loads of discounts for all sorts of suites at the moment and you can save a bit more by downloading from a US company sometimes, specially if the dollar is weak.

The main difference between Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security is that the 360 has an online backup included. For the extra fiver I'd take that option if you don't have a backup in place already.

If its set and forget you cant beat windows firewall and MSE, which you've obviously never used, tends not to turn your computer into a useless doorstop as norton does.

I do have to admit its a unique implementation of security: If the user can use the computer they cant break it. But it not very practical.

I like the idea of having everything under one thing without manually updating definitions - which is the best for that? I am not sure what protection I have at the moment just windows vista I think

Why do people not like Norton and it I buy a copy can I use it on one more computer at home?
