Norton or equivalent?

Our Noton 360 is up for renewal and they want £60+ for renewing. We have 4 pcs/laptops in our house and was wondering if there was a similar but cheaper product around which could be loaded onto 4 pcs. Any ideas?

Yes it does. Better in fact, make sure you use the norton removal tool after uninstalling it.

It doesn't have quite as many features, but there are other freebies available to fill the gaps if you feel you need them.

I've had it with my updated (paid for version) of AVG 9 and plan to uninstall it and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials. As I understand it I also need a firewall as the existing Windows Firewall is not regarded as being effective enough.

What firewall do you recommend and what else do I need in the way of security (for home banking, purchasing, general browsing, etc). I already have Spybot.

Please bear in mind I'm a silver surfer with little technical knowledge, so don't go into jargon.

    Thanks

Don't bother with the renewal option. Its cheaper to buy the full product off of amazon, see here, and here.

My mum, recently had the same dilemma.I can't remember whether she went for Nrton Internet Security 2010, or Norton 360 2009, but it was a lot cheaper than upgrading.

Whether the Microsoft firewall is good enough depends on what version of Windows you have. The one in Vista and Windows 7 is better than the XP one.

Do you connect via a wireless router? If so check if ti has a hardware firewall built in as most do. If it has I wouldn't bother with running a firewall at all although some people prefer the belt and braces approach.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Thanks. I use Windows XP, although am considering change to Windows 7.

I connect via a wired router (3 computers on network). I understand this router also has a firewall, so it sounds as if I am going to have enough protection with this and the Windows one.

Anyway AVG 9 upgrade has caused so many problems next step is to uninstall it and downloan Microsoft Security Essentials. If this doesn't at least cure the problem of computer no longer switching off, I'm going to have to do complete reformat and will then reload with Windows 7.

I have corresponded with the AVG helpline over the problems I've had since the upgrade. They asked for sections of the Events Log which showed no problems and then obviously had no idea because they could only come up with the idea that there may be a firewall conflict. (AVG 8.5 had been working perfectly).

I noticed this morning that a message appeared on screen that AVG was changing the firewall settings to allow Google to do something. Vanished before I could finish reading it, but I don't like the idea of AVG having so much power over my computer.
