More to the point why did OP pay a deposit on a car they hadn't even looked at? 0 -
actually just thinking about it, the last car I bought, I asked the mileage and she said she thought six thousand. well blow me when I got inside and put my key in the ignition, the dash lit up and the odometer said 6000 exactly...
More than likely ex hire/lease where they offload them at a certain age or mileage to unsuspecting buyers.
Previous owner didnt happen to be a LTD company did it?0 -

I did. but then I knew I wanted a nearly new Octavia Estate L&K 2.0L I wasn't too fussed about colour or exact mileage, especially not on a Diesel.
in the end I got an ex-Skoda Fleet car that was 9 months old, complete with a 3 year (from date of MY purchase) warranty.
I have to confess my haggling wasn't as good as it could have been. I forgot to get at least half a tank of fuel as part of the deal

which they will do. I'd even say let me bank it and have it cleared first, then in 3 days once it's cleared, come back with the remaining 1000 so you can drive it away lol.when you walk in, do so with a cheque for 10k pre-written with the payee line blank, when you negotiate, you say here's a cheque for 10k, the name's blank. do we have a deal. if they say no,0 -

which is why I won't be buying my next car from You, Dear Boy
As far as I'm concerned, a deal is a deal.
One Salesman agreed a deal price with me. then started to renege on certain things, like road-tax, and neglected to mention credit-card surcharges either.
When it broke down 36hrs after I took delivery, his attitude was pretty poor again, so I rejected the car under SOGA, given that the fault computer spat out 12 pages of fault diagnostics.0 -
Don't most places charge for handing a credit card...? OK places like cafes might not, but 2.5% is a lot on a car that is a couple of grand...
If someone came to me with a cheque filled out for a grand less than the screen price i'd laugh them off the yard. Before giving them a good kicking lol.
The 12 pages of fault codes could have been stored in the cars memory for years. We don't go thru everycar cleaning the memory before they leave here.0 -
Just to update. I saw the car before I placed the deposit but I didn't have time to test it on Sunday so I left the deposit to hold it till I went back today. I didn't realise the £100 deposit was linked to a seemingly legal agreement to buy. The car in question was first registered 28/01/09 and had been in the showroom for approx 40 days so I thought 12,500 was quite a high mileage for 8/9 months old car, so when I went back and saw the actaul mileage was 14,400 I wasn't too happy. I do believe it was a genuine mistake on their part but they were quite happy to release me from the agreement and promised to refund my £100 when it hits their bank. btw The dealer in question was Arnold Clark.A problem shared is a problem multiplied.

Well they held it for you. Presumably you are happy to have spent £100 for them holding the car.
Not very good moneysaving though is it?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

No, as I said, they're going to refund my £100. I've no doubt I'll have to remind them though.
