For devilment sake

For devilment sake I sent the following question to BT via their online form on the 03/01/05

'I'm at a loss. I've been a customer now with BT for many, many years. I have my family and friends options selected for maximum benefit. I phone a friend in Spain, most times twice a day for about 15-20 minutes each time.

Imagine my surprise when reading Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert website (I got his name via my local BBC radio where he does a regular spot.)I discovered I could make the same call to Spain for 1p per minute 24/7

My calculations show that a twenty minute call via BT would cost me a minimum of £3.59 or there about, while the same call via an override provider costs me a connection charge of 3p plus 1p per minute i.e. 23p as opposed to £3.59.

I have been using the company now for a number of weeks and can find no difference in the quality of service they are offering me or no difference in the quality of line I receive.

Can you tell me what I gain from giving BT £3.59 as opposed to 23p? Can you offer me the same or a better deal?'

I received the following reply on 07/01/05

Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to you and for any inconvenience this may have caused. In order to advise you of the information requested. please could you therefore contact one of our experienced advisors on 0800 800 880 and your query will be dealt with promptly.

Again for devilment I'll give them a ring possibly Tuesday and see what they have to say. Any idea of questions I should put to them?

Kevin

This is called competition. If BT were allowedto drop their call charges to match those of 18866.com and/or 1899.com, then these companies would be put out of business overnight. The result of that would be that BT would once again be in a true monopoly position and they would have no hesitation in jacking their charges up even further. Regulation in the UK means that BT, unlike most of the other telecoms service providers, cannot do exactly as it wants.

Just take advantage of what's on offer. BT won't be able to give you any answers. Most BT operators don't understand BT's own tariffing, let alone anyone elses.
