Hi cafelady.:D I recieved a letter saying that my energy consumption in the first quarter of 2009 was 13.85 units per day . We began to look for the culprits in our house. My son was very newborn so some of these costs may have been unusual, but this was our strategy:- Everything off at the wall when not in use
- Wash clothes on quick wash cycle at 30 degrees (soak nappies first!)
- Empty and disconnect second freezer
- Calculated that dishwasher costs £1.20 per cycle:eek:. Wash up by hand now!
- Take tubs of food out of freezer the night before rather than defrosting in the microwave.
- Use DH's work laptop in the eves for MSE, he charges it at work, and the battery lets me surf for a couple of hours
Many thanks for the concerned messages about savings. They will be back in march, accumulated from salary, and my income up until then is not in danger since it is owed to me as accrued leave. I do think you are all right though and this is a public forum, so let me be very clear: I am not saying this is something anyone else should do. It just works for us due to unusual circumstances.
Hope that helps
Shaz, :beer:I do use the online tax return system, it's just that I had so many friends warn me that life has no space in it when you have a baby, so I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. But it turns out that I can
Tesco points addict, Hiya, I am indeed that same 50p lady. I'm not sure how many recipes one is allowed to post on the mortgage section, and I know that diary threads are not allowed on OS boards anymore, but maybe the odd little recipe might be tolerated

Hi Weezl!
I followed your 50p a day diary, came in a bit late with it though and never fully caught up so I'm glad to have found this diary near the start!Subscribed and I'm hoping to keep up this time
Loved the saltdough decorations btw, look like they cost way more than £1.25!!
Sounds like you're doing so well already :T Wishing you lots of luck for the MFi3 challenge but I really doubt you'll need it. Hope all is well with the bump toox

Hi Weezl,
Obviously keeping our bills down will help us pay off our mortgages so well done with the electricity reduction. Was the 13kwh per day just electric, do you have gas as well? Just wondered what that equates to in money, if that's not too cheeky a question:o?
We live in a big draughty old victorian flat near the sea in Scotland! and spend £55 per month gas and electric together. This is averaging 60kwh per week electric, 10 units (ie x 31 ie 310 kwh) gas. Compared to our friends I know we are achieving a small miracle. We could still reduce it further as we are comfortable, watch loads of tv, ps3, boil kettles, electric hob and fan oven etc but we are quite happy with this bill for that amount.0 -

Hi deedee
It was just our electricity and it was approx £60 a month . A change of provider and those reductions means it's more like £22:T.
I know what you mean about draughty victorian buildings. My house is 1904 and very chilly!

My house is an end terrace pre 1900s and very very cold as well. The heating comes on at 3.20 for when we get back from school and work but at wkds we sit with blankets mostly if we are home in the day lol. (although put fire on yesterday as was freezing!)
I really should make a conscious effort to take the food out the freezer for the next days meals but i forget!
Also the dishwasher is a good one, if I fill the bowl up to wash the SC pot for the next lot I have been terrible and chucking the water away but now have been washing up the other plates on the side as well so the dishwasher doesnt go on so oftenMPs left feb '08 276- Dec 13 36 :T MB Jan 10 ~ £82,377 Dec 13 ~ £29987
EMFD was Feb 32  NOW Dec 2013 its Dec 2016
MF new target Dec 16 REACHED!! :j0 -
Weezl74 I am in the process of trying to change our energy provider as we are paying far too much. If anyone wants to feel better about their bills then here I go...we pay £74 a month on gas and £43 a month on electricity. There are only 2 of us so I think this is kind of ridiculous!MFW 2025 No. 7 £600/£1200
MFiT-T7 No. 6 £1915.10/£30,0000
