Hi weezl, I've been enjoying your MFW diary.
A few posts ago you were talking about cashback cards and how you'd done the AmEx and were now doing Capital 1.
I just wanted to let you know that after your year of using Amex (ie. after you've finally got the cashback) you can close your Amex account and then open another and get the 5% cashback all over again.

Also, another good idea is to get a barclaycard, use it once or twice then put it away unused for a few months. Then phone to cancel it telling them it's not competitive and let them put you through to the department that deals with cancellations. Explain to this department that you get better cashback with other cards (don't be specific) and Barclaycard are great at offering you something to stay with them. I negotiated them to 2% cashback on all purchases for 12 months. I have now requested to cancel my Barclaycard 3 times and each time they have offered me (with some negotiation) a better cashback deal than i can find anywhere else (except the Amex 1st 3 months).

    Hope this helps

I'm amazed that you can pay your tax bill with a credit card - is there a fee?

    apologies Phizzimum, it says this:

Paying Self Assessment by debit or credit card over the Internet: BillPay

If you have a debit or credit card issued by a UK bank, you can pay your Self Assessment tax over the Internet using the BillPay service provided by Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank.
If you wish to pay by credit card a non-refundable transaction fee of 1.25 per cent will be added to the charge. Any charge of less than £00.01p will be rounded up to a penny.
HMRC does not accept American Express or Diners Club cards.

so would no longer be worth it for me. I think when we did it we had a higher rate cashback with Barclaycard. :o

Zebedy, great tip about barclaycard, I'll look into that tomorrow! :T

  • Really ought to get a cashback card ....................currently we are using a tesco credit card and the points really mounting up but i should check the points against cash first i suppose i try and do clubcard deals with vouchers . At the mo i think we get 1 point per £ spent and 4 for each £ at Mr T so 4p or 16p in clubcard deals

(the heating will be on in there too!!)

ISOM- 50p is good price for hm card i really ought to get on with making some but can't find my creative juices .

Just out of curiosity, do any of you have pensions which you pay into as well, or is clearing your mortgage a priority before starting to pay into a pension?

    hi cazz

DH is self employed and he stopped paying in to a personal pension years ago, when we realised how little it would provide.

We tend to view the house as our main investment (is that a terribly British thing?). obviously it is our family home now, but when the girls have left home we'll downsize. we've also talked about maybe buying a second property once the mortgage is paid off.

i have a very small pension from years ago thats worth practically nothing hubby has an occupational(nhs pension) and a forces pension so i will have to hang on to him or i will starve:rotfl::rotfl:

Joking aside we are in the process of getting forecasts for both as he would love to retire in 2yrs time at 55 but can only afford to if we are mortgage free. the forces one will kick in at 60 and we will be rich in comparison but 5yrs is a long time ....................

Signed up for a credit card today just for the £20 acceptance cashback ;)

H/M sausages for dinner with poached eggs beand and fried new potatoes ...yummy
