Checked in the instruction manual and my washer uses a maximum of 2100w and the normal 40degree colourfast cotton wash takes 1hr45mins, since my electricity is 20.757p / kWh one cycle costs me:

    20.757 (cost of leccy) x 2.1 (kW of appliance) x 1.75 (no of hours - 1 & 3/4) = 76p

I do on average 2 - 3 wash loads per week so that's £119 per year JUST in using my washing machine. If I use the fastwash setting that only takes half an hour (doesn't spin as well though) so would thus only cost me £34 a year for the same number of washes. That's quite a saving, so that combined with decreased use of my hairdryer would save us £102 a year, it's all money in the mortgage kitty.

Hells flames, just worked out that running my dishwasher on a "normal" wash which takes 2 hours, assuming my dishwasher uses maximum 2kw on a cycle (for wash, rinse & dry, I can't find the ACtual power for it) would cost me 87p that's a shocking £304 per year if I did one cycle per day!!! I need to lie down.

Just popped in to post a linky that will appeal to the frugal...recycle wool which for me would be great so my tast next week is to try! Weezl shall we have a bash as an actvity?!!

A faff but bearing in mind some wool is 8+ a ball worth while...
Be careful though ISOM, quite often with garments using synthetic yarns (acrylic or polyester mixes etc) once the yearn has been knitted up and washed it kills the yarn fibres making it very difficult and often impossible to use again. My mother used to knit for a living and is in the process of teaching me all she knows (I've recently taken an interest in knitting) but when I asked her if buying jumpers from charity shops and unravelling them was a good frugal idea she strongly advised against it saying that the yarn won't knit up properly.

I mean it's worth a try, just thought I'd warn you first in case you went out and bought a dozen jumpers to unravel :p

cazz we do a quck wash and then an extra spin, the spin only costs 2p. Might be worth trying that?

Quick wash doesn't let us down hardly ever and we have poosplosions to contend with here!

Hiya bargain hunter, I do remember you :) Welcome, and I look forward to your tips

Fortunately I can't find my instruction booklet, however I only use the economy wash & try to run on Economy 7 as much as possible. Same with washing machine, then when I get up (around 5.30 ) I bung on tumble drier :o. But am starting to be more frugal with that, honest :)

Weezl, haven't used that precise nutroast but when bought a similar one I seem to remember it lasted 2 meals for 2 adults - 1 main meal & took to work with salad 2 days for lunch.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

ooh thanks for that link ISOM - it's something I've been thinking of doing and I've started looking in charity shops for nice wooly jumpers I could unravel. so I've bookmarked that link so I can do it properly without strangling myself!

weezl - the chickens haven't been laying since the snow came. they lay less in winter anyway but I guess at the moment they need all their energy to keep warm. maybe my next knitting project should be for them!

I know NOTHING about chickens - but seem to recall from somewheres that its necessary to give chickens WARM water to drink in the winter - so more of their "energy" goes towards egg production (as opposed to keeping themselves warm IYSWIM).

....visions of chickens sitting there having a conversation along the lines of "Cor Myrtle - its SO cold hereabouts right now....blow those humans...one egg for them....and I'M keeping it in here now keeping myself warm (shiver...shiver....). DO pass over that hotwater bottle in a minute....cluck...."

  • I always use quick 40 wash for everything except the bathmat set which goes on a 60 one day when all your boys are bigger weezl youll see why.......

Just ordered some magnetic paper to have a go at making fridge magnet photos for gifts and some t shirt transfer paper too i was thinking plain cotton shopping bags could be personalised for grandparents with photos etc . I technically got the paper for free as i get a paper allowance for uni

I picked up a x stitch book for 10p a while ago with lovely american indian stuff in i wondered if you could make a mosaic using x stitch patterns as a guide even thought of using magazine pictures/pages to make into squares then use if that makes sense.modern arty ?? i think windows has some software that can turn photos into xstitch patterns too.

Written a list of cards we will need through the year and decide to try and make some more but without buying anything......then looked on ebay and tempted to but a bulk lot instead same old dilemma time v mone. I like cardmaking but have got to be in a creative mood which is difficult at the minute due to pressures of coursework, my own health and mil's deteriorating mental state as well as my ds recently diagnosed ADD !!! sometimes have to remind myself somethings are more important than saving a few quid!!
