You can be bankrupt in the army now, they would prefer that to you being, as woody01 said, open to subversion and blackmail.

What sensitive information do you think the RAF and Navy have by the way, that the army don't in this era of joint ops?

There must be something because every person who joins up the RAF and the Navy has to be Security checked wheras in the army they only run the checks when posted into certain posts.

I'll add my 2 pence worth

I know a couple of lads that work in the career office and currently they are able to turn people away for pretty much anything because of the amount of people trying to join all 3 services.

AT the moment the days of them having to chase people around to join is gone....so you need to be aware that your debt may well go against you! however you may just be what they need....it'll depend on many things especially if you do well in the BARB test and have very good fitness.....so don't let it stop you trying

they can only say no now can't they. I mean I've seen recruits who couldn't even get a bank account because they are so much in debt but they were kepted in.

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

Everyone in the army is security checked up to SC level, some have developed vetting etc etc. Hope that helps.

Unless that has come in in the last year then it is just untrue. I used to work on an A1 secure compound somewhere overseas and we used to have to accompany the Army around the site when they visited because they were not Security Cleared as per order of the MP's and Site commander. I was if the RAF

    I hope that helps.

I think you'll find now all Army are SC because to use the Bowman radio system you have to be SC....which is pretty much everyone now

I see, I thought it must have been new. I know that alot of the regular privates wouldn't pass an SC which is why they prefer not to do them. Also as it costs around 15k a check and the Army has such a quick turnover it just doesn't make much sense to give it to everyone. Hence the old policy of only giving it to those that require it.
  • IVA details should be spoken about at your interview, which may result in you getting another interview regarding the deatails of the IVA. As long as you can show maturity and have learned lessons from it that should be fine.

I know for certain that they do perform financial background checks.
However, the Armyu are far more lenient than the Navy or Air Force as the pongos aren't as liable to be party to 'sensitive information'.
    Absolute rubbish.
No background financial checks are done
"Sensitive information" - don't the Army fix Challenger 2 tanks or carry out intelligence gathering etc. I am cleared to Secret.

You are only security checked if you are going for specific jobs e.g. Signals, Int Corps.

With regards to debt, you can only join the Army if you have debts of about £350 a month max. Its not the amount you owe but your outgoings servicing the debts. Car insurance is not a debt but a living expense so you will not be asked about it. A contract phone is taken into account but a PAYG is not.

If you lie about your debts and you become an admin case struggling to pay them off you could be kicked out of the Army as a defect on enlistment as you have lied on your application. As has been mentioned recruitment is buoyant at the moment and you may be seen as a risk candidate and be turned down until your finances become more manageable.
  • Hi,

My husband joined the army 8months ago after been made redundant!

We had a huge ammont of outgoing our morgtage was £700 per month @ the time before any bills or outstanding debt.

My husband was advised by the careers officer not to mention the fact that he had a morgtage as this could have made a diffrence between him getting in or not!!!

He did'nt mention it and he got in!

    Best of luck!

Also remember once your in its not easy to get out think it through carefully!!!!!!
