  • Just been having a read through the thread (not all of it! Not feeling too well and I think I could die of exhaustion before I got to the end...) Brilliant idea, especially as it's 9 days til pay day and I've run out of money completely. Am having a look through my cupboards and freezer to see what I can do. I get the feeling I could last a month without too many problems, provided I was happy with some odd combinations, I'm a definite hoarder!
CCP The Bulgar wheat could make a really nice salad. Use it in the same way you would cous cous, but my favourite salad type recipe is to cook the bulgar wheat as per the instructions on the packet. Get some salt, oil, garlic and mint (usually dried as that's all I ever have) in a pestle and mortar. Grind it up and then mix it through the cooked bulgar wheat. Add plenty of lemon juice, chick peas and any other beans or meat that you want, and season to taste. It tastes lovely and fresh, and you can add so many different things to it, I usually chuck in cucumber, spring onion or regular onion, any salady bits that are hanging around!

It won't be until next weekend, I'm afraid - I'm trying out my dad's recipe for cider cake tomorrow and I don't need cake and flapjacks in the house at once. (I'm not saying I couldn't eat both, just that it wouldn't be a good idea!)
Back after a very long break!

    Well, Im feeling rather impressed.

The last remnants of the waitrose chicken from earlier in the week has gone in the pan with thinlyu sliced onins, red peppers, cheapo noodles, veg stock, half of the tin of straw mushrooms. Some thai paste, 5 spice, rice vinegar. looks Pretty good so far!

I have also managed to go to the shop to purchase a bottle of wine to start using up this stockpile of Mulled pouches I bought yesterday  better get stuck in - house smells lovely!

  • Ok I have a silly question - what's rubber chicken??
  • Ok I have a silly question - what's rubber chicken??

It's using a whole chicken then making it stretch to other meals, for example I roast my chicken (for a Sunday dinner) the strip most of the rest of the chicken off that doesn't get eaten. This get either put in the fridge or freezer for another meal (fajitas, chicken stir fry etc ect) with the carcass I boil up to make chicken stock which normally ends up as a soup.

So rubber stretchers hense the term rubber chicken;)

Search for it on the forums and you'll find some posts but think it's just 'stretching' the chicken out as long as you can i.e. roast chicken first night, chicken curry second night, chicken soup third night, use carcass for chicken stock for freezer etc etc.

I am trying to use up my stuff and I'm doing okay as I defrosted my freezer a few weeks ago and now know what I have in it. I have some prawns, scallops, and white fish that seems to be shouting fish pie but I've never made it. I would guess cook the fish etc in milk or wine with some salt and pepper, parsley etc. Mix with a white sauce and top with mashed potatoes and grated cheese. I think you can put hard boiled eggs in as well but not sure about this. I have everything in for this but does anyone have any better ideas?

By the way tonight I had a portion of chicken and vegetable soup out of the freezer (made out of leftovers originally) and some homemade bread, DH is out at the pub after the football (couldn't be bothered to go out in the rain myself so I've stayed on the settee with a bottle of white) and DS doesn't come home much at weekend as he usually has a better offer. Have to admit though to having just opened one of the boxes of Ferrero Rocher I had bought for Christmas.

My stockpiling is on toiletries; I have a cupboard full of them but did have a panic when I realised I didn't have a megapack of toilet rolls in there the other day. Got out a box of tissues and then realised there were some in the other bathroom wicker box at the side of the toilet. Have since bought two packs in my online shopping from Ocado which were 2 packs of nine Andrex for £6 I think.

I have made fish pie with white fish of all sorts ( pollock, plaice, cod, haddock etc)

I put the fish in a small saucepan and poach lightly with milk. Add any herbs to this. and a chopped onion and lightly bubble until the fish is cooked and falls apart. Add handful of frozen peas and creme fraiche or fromage frais to thicken. A HM white sauce is also fine to use, Im not that good at making it ;)

For the topping of course you could have mash but I usually do scalloped potatoes, just boil sliced pots, spray with ooil, throw on a tray into the oven keep turning for about 25 mins .

Ok I have a silly question - what's rubber chicken??

Rubber chicken :D Be careful what you tell your family; there's a poster on here whose DD was convinced that the dish was really made from rubber  :rotfl:

I made a tear and share bread using sun dried tomatoes from the freezer :T I've taken out a pheasant and some bacon for tomorrow's dinner.
