Don't forget that some of that meat can be frozen and go towards your Christmas Meal planning. Christmas/New Year meals aren't just about the luxury foods that we get through - there's the other days as well :). I'm usually desperate for a simple poached egg on toast by about 27th Dec ;). Plus your tins of tomatoes will really come in useful for making casseroles out of any left-overs from joints/turkeys etc.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
My freezer ( an old chest type) is so full it's impossible to get anything else in - or to find anything easily! I so need to sort it out and defrost, but have been putting it off for weeks. My larder's four deep shelves are also packed to the gills - and yes, things throw themselves off at me if I try to get anything down. The floor in there is stacked pretty much too.....am beginning to think I ought to be joining you on this challenge, NualaBuala!
As it's Saturday I'll be off to Mr T's after breakfast as usual, to get even more stuff for next week! :eek:Why?????
Am rapidly reviewing my plans for the day! Now, which to tackle first - freezer or larder???? Don't think my energy burst will be enough for both!
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!

Bemused, do your freezer first if you can
I bet you've got at least £100 worth of food in there if it's full, have a mooch through and make a list of what you've got.
Then see what you can match it with in your store cupboard.
After all that you won't want to go shopping ;)

Oooh I should try this. I have so many dried and tinned goods in my store as well as 3 freezer drawers full of 'bargains'........ and I am a singleton who is alway on a diet!!

How to avoid a bargain though? Morrisons are selling Branston beans 4 for £1, cheapie beans are 29p so how can I leave the Branston ones on the shelf? You wouldn't get that interest on your money in any savings account I know of. I have bought at least £20 worth so far and .......yes I like beans a lot. They'll keep for years too.

I have the same amount of tinned toms too.... remember when Netto were doing 4 tins of Napolina for 99p?

I definitely think I need help!!

    Hiya,
Just reading through this as i wrote down the other night all what we had in the freezer and cupboards and i wrote out a months meal plan with it all and managed to find meal combinations for almost every night for the month.
All i need to buy in is some fresh produce-just off to see what i need to buy for this weeks dinners!
This hopefully will save me some money-we seem to spend a fortune on groceries and then find i`m not organised enough so end up getting take aways too.
This is the year i cut down spending and try to get fit!Going to walk with my son in the pushchair to the supermarket today its a lovely sunny frosty morning here save on petrol and its a good round 4 mile walk so i should burn off some calories too.
What a great site this is reading the posts makes me want to get motivated and change the way we do things!
    Thanks all.

  • I was just thinking I needed to find that storecupboard challenge thread when I came on here today. My freezer and cupboards are heaving, and I just had to put up more shelves in my pantry/larder thingie cause I've run out of room in there too.

I've started by sticking notes inside each cupboard door with a list of what's on each shelf, so I spend less time digging through mountains of food to get to the one tin I need. Need to do the same with the freezer drawers, but I think by the time I get through the freezer the whole thing would've defrosted there's that much in there.

Don't think I have enough fruit and veggies in store to get by on a fiver a week, but good luck Nuala! I second ChocClare, the folks on here are amazing for making delicious feasts out of the most unusual combinations of food.

I'm off to Asda in a while and just wrote down what I need for the week - I've been doing monthly meal planning but then I can't shut the fridge!!
De-frosted the freezer on Wednesday :T and can now shut it properly so need to run some of the stocks down ready for Christmas goodies and left-overs. It's only me for food this week as DS1 and 2 are with their dad so I'm going to see if I can get all I need for the week for less than tenner - I need stuff for pack-up as well.

If I manage it the 'change' from the tenner can go in my sealed pot :j

Good luck Nuala - keep us posted

I am going to give this a try too as we have a chest freezer full of food as shelves full of tins etc so we are going to try to mealplan when we get back from our week away to save some money on the shopping and to try to make healthier meals once all the junk food is out of the freezer.

What a good idea! I've been saying to myself for months that I really ought to use up the larder and freezer things and just buy milk, fruit and greens for a few weeks - now you have given me the incentive to do it!
