Text for less than a penny

A WHITEPARISH photographer is helping mobile phone users make huge savings on their text-message bills.

The Tex2 system, invented by Stuart McWilliam and friend Phil Jones, from Suffolk, lets mobile phone owners send text messages for less than a penny a time, rather than the normal price of up to 12p a text.

The system, which works by using the same technology that allows phones to download games and ringtones, can also be used to fend off text bullying.

To use Tex2, mobile owners must first download free software from the firm's website, at https://www.tex2me.com, and install it on their own phone.

As soon as the programme is up and running, messages can be sent to other Tex2-ready phones via the internet, rather than through the phone network's text-message routes.

It is this use of the internet, which is more commonly used to send football scores and weather reports to mobiles, that makes Tex2 so cheap.

"We can afford to give Tex2 away because we have very low overheads and no greedy shareholders to satisfy."

"Tex2 will remain free forever," said Stuart.

I have no connection and haven't tried the service myself, just a Salisbury Journal reader.
