  • In you opiniion maybe, but not in the eyes of the law.

If in the eyes of the law it is considered to be reckless, how come neither offences carry points on your licence. The fines are £30 and £60 hardly a penalty for recklessness.

I did say it was only my opinion. I think the law is wrong here.

Care to expand on your opinion?

As you may weel know dangerous has replaced reckless in the RTA. Dangerous driving falls far below that of a standard expected from a competent driver. How does failing to wear a seatbelt or helmet lower the standard of your driving?

I see cyclists most days and every weekend out on their racing bikes wearing lycra and, without exception, I've never seen one without a helmet.
All I'm interested in is minimising the risks so helmet, hi viz, lights, and whatever else it takes to make me more visible, go on every time I go out on my bike.
The only thing I haven't been able to find are goggles which fit over my specs and if/when I do I'll be wearing those as well.
I personally can't see the point of lycra on a bike. It's protective qualities leave rather a lot to be desired. Much rather be wearing jeans.

If you need a pair of glasses that take lenses, may I suggest you look online at places that sell glasses for shooting. They tend to be a little more expensive, but they are usually really good. I personally swear by a manufacturer called Guarder, who make a cracking set with interchangeable lenses (Clear, Yellow, Black & Plutonite) and a set of prescription inserts, all for £30. You do need to get lenses made up, the price of which depends on your optician and prescription. Failing that, try somewhere like Screwfix Direct, for a range of safety eyewear, that doesn't all look cack :)

  • My brother in law has to sort out the brains of people who take your view about cycle helmets.

Even the most brilliant Brain Surgeons have very limited knowledge of the brain unfortunately.;)

If someone has suffered brain damage they usually stay that way until they die.;)
Nature wants the human race to survive. However, it does not depend on us because we are not its only invention.

According to the dictionary I just looked in, reckless means heedless or careless. I am sure I'm still allowed to use the word without referring to the RTA?
I wasn't accusing anyone of breaking a law, but I was saying that IMO they are being reckless by not wearing a helmet. Didn't mention the RTA, didn't mention any laws.

Yes, that is usually the case, but there are several things which can be done to prevent further damage. For instance, occasionally when someone suffers a brain injury, their brain swells up and surgeons have to saw the tops of their skulls off in order to prevent further brain damage.

Indeed you are right in what you say.

However it's a good job standards aren't judged by your dictionary and opinion.
