Sound like a type of plum/gage, just goggled and yes it is the plum family, best used for cooking according to what I read, so jam and crumble's/pie's probable the best use, but try one first, 'cause I'v never tryed 1 myself, also I found a wine recipe for bullaces. hth

This is a brilliant thread - just read it through.

I've just made some bottles of redcurrant gin and vodka, using produce form my garden.

I'd love to make sloe gin later in the year. Would anyone be prepared to share reasonably explicit location details of where I might find sloes anywhere in the Cardiff/Caerphilly/Pontypridd areas, pretty please? :D

there's a park just by the train station in Rhiwbina, north Cardiff. Park on the bend in pen-y-dre and cross the station footbridge and you are there. Not quite ready yet tho we got a few handfuls of purply ones today.

we picked 7lb blackberries today, a few scratches to prove it. I'm doing a round up of jam jars and thinking of making some wine was well. The local common has loads of heavily laden apple trees so I am thinking of all the options. Wonder whethere I should get an apple press in for making cider !! a bit adventerous for me perhaps.

Also got this really interesting book from the library called sloe gin and beeswax. Seasonal recipies from traditional household storecupboards...

    anyone else started yet?
  • Absolutely!! Blackberries today plus plums (well actually I think they were bullaces) - damsons not quite ready yet!!

I picked blackberries this morning. Lots ripe and lots still to come. Last year I picked at the same spot on the August bank holiday weekend, so quite a bit earlier this year.
Lots of damsons ready near MILs house, so will probably pick some of those tomorrow.

Yes, blackberries and plums so far.
Also found a tree that may be almonds. Will be keeping an eye on it as whatever it is isn't ready yet.
lindseykim13 - found something similar to you so hope someone knows what it is.

lindseykim, funny you should say this I've had the same issue today. Saw something very similar and we had a discussion. WHy don't you post in the green fingered forum if you don't get an answer here? I thought they were sloes, my husband thinks they are a type of wild damson... Not sure what yours is though. I am getting one of those foraging books !!
