Parking for Kew Gardens

Does anyone have any tips on parking (preferably free :rotfl: )for Kew Gardens?

I'm taking the family, all adults and willing to walk for 10-15 mins, to the free entry on 2nd July. Further details of this at

I have been various times and never paid for parking

There is parking after 10am on one side of the road that runs along the length of Kew - though you would have to be there probably on the dot of 10 to get a space particularly on the day you mention as it will be busy then. Other non-peak times there is usually a space along here though can be a bit of a walk to the main entrance.

Some of the side streets allow parking for non-residents - I think it is after 12 in the week, weekend times might be different . Check the signs on each street as you will get a ticket or be clamped.

I usually park at the opposite end to where the Victoria entrance is as there is a smaller entrance here (near the pagoda - Lion Entrance) - there is usually parking on the side streets here if not on the main road (A307) itself.
  • If you get there too late there will be no parking available. Thing we did last time is to drive across the bridge after Kew, turn left at the lights and then turn right into the side streets down that road. Loads of spaces and free on weekends and bank holidays. It's about a 10 min walk back to the main gates at Kew but you then don't get stuck in amongst all the other cars trying to get out.
    Debt free (apart from mortgage)

2nd July is a Sunday and most 'Controlled Zones' dont operate on a Sunday so you might be able to park in more places than you think.

As I mentioned before the side streets towards the Lion Entrance usually have space and there are no restrictions on weekends and no restrictions after midday in the week. The main carpark is £4.50 so isnt ott by london standards - though having never parked there not sure how big it is. If you get there fairly early, I am sure you will find a place.
  • Thanks to everyone who posted above in response to my query.
With Sunday 2nd July fast approaching we're taking your advice and will seek out on-street parking, only using Kew Garden's car park as a last resort. Weather forecast looks brilliant
  • Parking on Kew Road proved a doddle just after 10 a.m. We parked very close to the Victoria Gate entrance.
It did seem very packed when we came out at 3 p.m. so I guess it may have been more difficult to find a space but we didn't look around the side streets since we didn't need to.
Thanks again to those who advised this.

    Parking at Kew is FREE.

Sure it's pay and display, but read the t'c and c's for the car park, which say something along the lines of "should you fail to display a valid ticket then your registration number will be noted".

No fines, no breach of contract, no debt to pursue.

    Therefore free parking.

Most folks are stupid enough to pay without reading the t's and c's !
