Copying a .mpg file to a DVD

Hi guys,

I have a slideshow that I created using Photo Story 3 for Windows. I then used Prism Video Converter to convert it from .wmv to .mpg and the .mpg file is currently on my computer.

However, I would like to burn it to a DVD so that when you put the DVD into a normal (i.e. attached to a TV) DVD player it plays automatically. There are no chapters or menus.

If I simply burn the .mpg file to a blank DVD, will this play on my DVD player? I only have one blank DVD and this is part of my DH's 30th birthday present so I need to get it right :D

Any advice gratefully received!

Thank you :)

I've used the Linux version of DeVeDe quite a lot and it has always worked well. A free Windows-based version is available here:

Thank you. I am downloading it now.
  • Hi, don't just burn the .mpg file to dvd, this will not work! You need to use dvd creation software to convert the video into dvd compatible mpeg2. You may well have something that will do this on your pc, a lot of manufacturers include this sort of software so you can use your dvd burner. My own preference to make dvd's is to use "convertxtodvd", but there are loads of progs out there that will do the job. If you have nero, or nti media maker, or roxio then these should do it. Good luck!

I should add that there are loads of slideshow maker progs that will make a dvd slideshow, without needing any other software. Wondershare dvd slideshow builder is just one.

    Hi,

I have Sonic RecordNow and InterVideo WinDVD on my computer. Will either of those work?

ETA: I've just looked at WinDVD and it looks like it's similar to Windows Media Player.
  • Hi, I have used windvd before, I am pretty sure it will convert .mpg to dvd.

Edit: the prog I have used is windvd creator, is this what you have?
  • Here is a free program you can download, this should do what you want. http://download.cnet.com/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-Free/3000-2646_4-10776287.html?!!!!!mncol

Depending on which version of Windows you have .. you could always try out Windows DVD Maker.

The foolproof way is to download the free (trial) version of Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 from here http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/product_2_2210___GBP.htm

Click on Burn movies and Photos, (Create a video DVD) click on next.
Put your title where it says 'Title'. Drag your file onto the window and click 'next'. Click 'next' again and away you go. (assuming you have your bland dvd in your 'burner)

Thank you for your help everyone.

I used Devede last night and it nearly produced what I wanted. The DVD jumped/paused a bit a couple of photos in (but that may have been due to the DVD) but, oddly, it chopped off some of the left and right hand sides of the slides which meant a little bit of the text couldn't be seen.

Although it would "have done", as it is part of my DH's present, I wanted it to be as perfect as possible, so I bought some more DVDs today to have another go. I downloaded Ashampoo and it's worked brilliantly. It took about 45mins to process but I've just played it on my DVD player (hubby has gone to bed!) and it plays properly and all the text can be seen.

Thank you for all your help and advice, I wouldn't have been able to do it without you.

    Glad it worked. :T
Just as a matter of interest, when the free period runs out Ashampoo will start trying to sell you Burning Studio 9. They usually drop it to about £15 but eventually it will come down to about £7.50. At that price it is a good buy as it also burns music cd's (either data, mp3's or audio) and has lots of other functions. ;)
