Thursday (yesterday) MAY have been a selling climax, which would mark a turning point. I have been busy buying into stocks but, being the sensible person that I am, I have chosen non-cyclical defensives.

The period to october is likely to show continued volatility. I have no mental block about riding out the storm, as all my stocks are good quality companies with high yields

Its not looking look for private pensions is it. What are they now in deficit by now - something like £50 billion aint it, and its only going to get worst if the FTSE keeps going down.

what you need to look for is consistently, if your main criteria for stock entry is the PE ratio - then you want to buy a stock thats had consistently low PE ratios for the last 20 years !!! not 12 months ! That increases the probability that the company WON'T go bust
what is PE ratio? what other criteria is there for stock entry and do you use mixture of both?

Thats a very simplistic and inaccurate evaluation.

Many of the deficits are caused by increased Govt taxation, companies taking payment holidays during periods of strong growth, new accountancy requirements and a short term stockmarket fluctuation.

Any half decent pension portfolio with sector allocated spread would be up year on year by around 10-15% pa. despite these fluctuations.

this is not really anything to do with your discussion but you seem to know a lot more than me - what is all this about BAA - I have not understood it but recieved a lot of paperwork - to sell or not to sell that is the question - I dont really understand any of it - but wish it could stay in British hands

I'm just signing the form and taking the money ..... or at least I will when my missing share certificate is re-issued by the registrars. I don't think the likes of you or I can have much effect on whether or not the company remains British!
