Hello All
I am getting paid on Wednesday, however I need to catch a train on Tuesday afternoon and I also need to pay for the train on that day. I have a visa debit Halifax card. If I try to charge the train fare to my card will I be charged for going over my overdraft limit or will this not clear until the next day?
Thanks in advance
Eva

It depends.
Sometimes when I've brought train tickets the money will go out a few days later there as on other days the money will shown to have been debited the next day.
Oh and most banks have it in their terms and conditions that they will process debits before credits to ensure they make the most money for themselves. So if you use your card tomorrow and it's processed the day after the bank will ensure that amount is debited before your wages are credited to the account.
Personally either:
1. Get an overdraft to cover the amount of the train ticket
2. Get a family member to loan you the money and pay them back as soon as you get paidI'm not cynical I'm realistic

You can't rely on the payment not going through straight away.0

You might be because a lot of banks "reserve" the debit in your account straight away ready to be taken out. This will drop your available balance by that amount.
I wouldn't risk it personally.
Could you bung it on a credit card just in case? Or even borrow the cash from someone for a couple of days?
So be careful when you bring that ticket!0 -
There's also the risk that the payment will be refused, as Halifax don't know that you're being paid on Wednesday.
This will result in a charge, unless you are on the Reward account. (Although note for the future that from 6th December onwards, this scenario would not result in any charge on Reward accounts, Ultimate Reward accounts, or Current Accounts).0 -

Check that the train company accepts cheques - google them - as TFL don't. .I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Hi
Im with HSBC and they can see on my account if a credit is going in on the next day. Not sure if this will work with your acct. They can see my child benefit and salary.
I would pay by cc to be on the safe side0 -
If you buy the ticket from the conductor on the train (assuming that's possible in your area without penalty) then it normally takes a few days to go through as it's not authorised online.
If you buy from a ticket office then it's likely to be authorised at the point of sale0 -

It usually declines when you don't have the funds available.
Don't know about on a train, wouldn't like to chance it if i wasn't able to pay0 -
