Go on, tell me what a Carol Singer costume should comprise

DS (age 10) has come home with a slip, saying he needs a costume for his role as a carol singer in the special assembly at the end of term.

Fine I thought, your school coat then.

Oooooh no, apparently his nice new Ski jacket from Next, which I bought as a good, warm, waterproof winter coat, won't do at all.

He wants a duffel coat, and a stripey scarf hat and gloves set (he always refuses to wear a hat, and loses gloves, so I think it's about 3 years since he last had those).

Right, a quick look on ebay has thrown up a rather nice stripey hat gloves scarf set for about £6 (tho I think it'll probably only get worn once). But a duffel coat?? do they still sell such things for kids ??? I can't afford new (seeing as I've got him a good coat anyway) and don't really have time to scour the charity shops.

How do I convince him that the Ski jacket is fine for the job ??
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

  • New hat glove & scraf sets in asda for £6 and £3 respectively:

might be cheaper than paying for postage through ebay, if you have an asda nearby.

haven't seen duffle coats for older boys in ages...
  • What about a charity shop? Not sure how lucky you'll be but it might be worth a look for a coat. Otherwise, just inform him that he will be wearing his ski jacket and that's that! I'm sure other mums won't be buying new coats just as a one off, surely most will be like yourself and will already have bought a perfectly fine coat.

As I said, I don't have time to go poking about charity shops right now, unfortunately. Of course I'm NOT going to buy him a new coat just for a school assembly.

I just wonder where they get these ideas from, I mean, there was I thinking "oh, that's nice and easy, being a carol singer".

    At least I haven't got to construct a lamb/donkey/robin outfit :j

    There are some on ebay:

I do think it's a bit cheeky though - I don't see why his normal coat won't do??

Dd (3) is doing her first nativity and preschool, and I was most impressed that they're supplying the costume!

Sorry, my fault for not reading properly :o. I had to make a christmas pudding outfit for my god daughter last year! I honestly don't know where they come up with these things either, and there's always one or two parents who come up with something spectacular

Oh, just tell him that no one will notice the coat anyway if he has bright hat, scarf and gloves on!
Tell him that due to it being almost christmas you can afford to buy another coat, even second hand. Perhaps ask him to ask any of his friends if they have a spare one they can loan to him?

Tell him that he will look more modern and up to date in his own coat!

Ohh also, tell him you had a duffle coat when you were a kid and it was soooo itchy that you came out in a rash all around your neck and face! ~ its a little white lie (but that did happen to me).:rotfl:

Tell the school that his winter coat will be sufficiant and your not forking out for something that will only be used once unless they want to pay for it.

Or if its your son who is saying no, tell him you don't have the money for the coat so close to christmas

Our lad's school uniform was a duffel coat, so they certainly still exist for children of this age. Doesn't mean you have to buy one though!
