Using a normal Orange sim in an iPhone?

Is it possible to use a normal Orange pay monthly sim in an iPhone and get an unlimited data bolt on? I know this probably won't allow for the free wifi but my wife currently has a very good deal with Orange and is due an upgrade. She can use my old iPhone 3G but I don't know if the Orange iPhone only takes specific iPhone sims like the o2 ones used to do?

I am presuming that your old iPhone 3G is on O2, in which case it would need to be unlocked for it to use a sim card from a different network.

There are ways you can find out how to do this by searching on the net.

Ive never done it myself so dont know whats involved exactly.

BUT you dont have to do it yourself now, because O2 will unlock your iPhone for free so that you can use any network sim card in it.

    See...

    Hope this helps ?
  • Yeah, my iPhone is unlocked through o2 but I'm upgrading in a couple of weeks to the 3GS. If the wife gets a good retention deal through Orange with free data I'm hoping to give her my iPhone so she can use that and still get the benefit of the really good tariff she's on.

I'm quite sure theres an unlimited iPhone data bundle you can add on with Orange which is charged at £10.00 per month. I'm not 100% though but I know you can't use any exisiting free data on the account with an iPhone.

Thanks, would they know it was being used with an iPhone though? If we call for retentions and tell them we already have an iPhone, would they still give us a good retentions deal with the data then?

Checking the account history, if you've had the sim placed inside an iPhone there would be a log of it...so they could tell you had been using an iPhone.

I'm sure they'd have a look of it, they're not daft and they know people sell on their upgrades and use the sim in another phone. Just tell them your looking for a good deal but you do need the iPhone data bundle too on it, see what they can do.
  • Thanks, if it comes to it we'll just get her on the iPhone tariff, but at the moment she gets 150 more minutes for almost half the price so it seems madness to have to do this.

One other question! Will you do an upgrade for someone with 93 days left on their contract? She can do an upgrade on Monday but the shop said they couldn't do it four days early when we went in yesterday as their systems wouldn't allow it, but he said it may be different if we phone up?

It's crazy isn't it! We already offer it whereby we can do an upgrade 90 days early, but even that gets added to the end of the contract. It won't be different if you call up.

I hate turning customers away when they're a day or two before upgrade, after all it is a save for me!

I have an iphone, and am on sim only from orange, with free data (500mb) it works fine no visual voicemail tho , but I can live without that.

If you tell them your using an iphone they'll charge you more. It doesn't say anywhere in the terms and conditions of sim only you can't use your sim in an iphone so your not doing anything wrong.

Iphone = milk the customer for every last penny.

If O2 unlock it, it will work with any sim, no need for an iphone sim. you only need one of those to get it activated on itunes for the first time.

You may need to enter the data settings manually they are not the same as the ones for iphone tarrifs, if you need them send me a pm.

Been using my Orange SIM in an unlocked O2 iPhone for a couple of weeks now. My unlimited data all working ok (and Orange online billing isn't showing any extra charges).

When I unlocked it through iTunes the internet settings installed themself automatically - didn't even need to do anything.
