What trousers to buy for DS to go Hiking?

DS is in cubs, they're going off on a winter walk, weekend after next.
So I know jeans are no good cos they hold water if it rains.
Last year he got away with a good pair of joggers, but they were fortunate, cos it was dry.
Should I just buy him a pair of waterproof overtrousers? He only goes on these things 2 or 3 times a year, so they won't get much wear before they're outgrown.

Go to the charity shop, find a pair of cargo style trousers that fit him.
then he can trash them all he likes.;)
Alternatively, get down to your local martial arts shop, buy a pair of lightweight trousers, they are really hard wearing, lighter and quicker to dry than jogging bottoms, but dense enough to keep the worst of the thorns off his legs. Our local shop charges about £10 a pair, they are available in black and the only thing identifying them as MA trousers is the extra material in the groin - but if they do any climbing that's probably going to come in handy.;)
One of the other MA mums buys them for her son to wear out to play, they last much longer than anything else he's had - apparently it's normal for him to take the knee out of ordinary trousers in less than week.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Look on ebay for a second hand pair of waterproofs I always get my DS's on there. I buy a size too big for him so I get at least 2 winters out of them and they are always usful as they pack down really small i leave ours in the boot. We have also found that because we have them if it is a bit windy and on of drizzle we'll still go for a walk.:happyhear YUMMY MUMMY TO HENRY BEAR AGED 10:happyhearslimming world need to get back to target 25lb to goDisney World here we come May 2018:j0

Are waterproof trousers sized big, to fit over joggers, or do I need to buy a size up (ds is 10, but wears school trousers for age 12, he's a tall, stocky lad)?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

I'm bumping this up, as I need to get this sorted TODAY. Please can anyone tell me whether over-trousers are sized big, to go over joggers, or do I need to buy a bigger size ?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

go to millets or any outdoor wear shop i paid £12 a pair for my girls waterproofs and i did get a size bigger to go over clothes and they do wear them regularly,to fro school, trips etc they were worth money.think this is only option if you need it sorted today:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

I'd pop to Decathlon at J26 on the M1, next to Ikea. They have very good quality outdoor clothing and it's usually very cheap. Waterproof trousers often get really sweaty, though, but some tough cargo pants would be just right as ailuro said.0

I'd go with a pair of decent quality waterproof overtrousers. http://www.vikingkids.co.uk/ do some really good ones that last ages and cost £16. Personally I'd go for a complete set instead, they're around £30 and that way you get a good rain coat as well. I think they do some sets up to age 12. We use ours all the time and they're great, the kids love wearing them and don't get sweaty.
From our experience the ones from VikingKids are really big so you definitely don't need to go a size up - they're designed to go over jeans etc. That's probably the same with other brands too.0 -
I would get hiking trousers, which are not waterproof, but dry out quickly and don't go all hard and heavy when wet. I personally can't stand waterproof over-trousers.
Decathlon is good and reasonable priced I would say if you can get there, or try Millets/other outdoor stores if it is more convenient.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
why not get him a waterproof poncho you can get them for a couple of quid, it can get hot in overtrousers and the ponchos are lightweight so easy to carry0

You definately wont need to get them larger than his usual size - the ones I have are a general size anyway - small/medium/large.
I would not expect to pay more than £10 a pair - I got mine from a local camping and caravan shop. They scrunch up really small so he can wear his joggers and throw these in his backpack to use just incase. You can stand there and agonize........
