Tesco pay as you go top up

I'm a current Tesco PAYG user and I've just registered for the top up with the free credit tariff. The recorded message says that it will be activated in 48hrs. My question is, do I need to top up my credit before or after the 48hrs activation text to get the free credit?
It doesn't make it clear in the instructions.

Top up after you get the text message saying you are on the new tarrif. Got my text 12 hours laterProblem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems
