Just to clarify I'm not actually concerned that he will turn into a knife carrying thug for a minute. I simply can't get my head around how such games are 'fun'.
Exactly, you are his mother and children frequent tell us adults how we don't understand them
Children always find a way to get what they want, and with games they can just play it at a friends house if not allowed at home.0 -
Dustykitten wrote: »No that's the thing I don't (to be honest I don't watch hardly any tv). Older two kids mainly watch Top Gear, Simpsons and Car/Road wars.
We do have a wii which is mainly played by my youngest although we all have a go.
The Simpsons ? Itchy and Scratchy in those is amusing to the majority of people surely ? That's normally quite extreme cartoon violence, but people find it funny. It's only a short step from there to Tekken and fighting other cartoon characters on screen - it's simply about competition and beating an opponent, whether it be in tennis or violently throwing them around. Kids need competition.0 -

Believe me with 3 boys all playing a variety of sports competition is not something that is lacking in this house. Interesting point though as DS2 is the one who finds it hardest if his football team looses. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

First step made, I've been and looked at the games in store. I'm starting to realise where I think my boundaries are, it is the war games. Having lost relatives in the wars (like so many I know) and visiting the graveyards in France I am finding those games a step too far. It is the call of duty game he is after and I'm really not keen. The other fighting ones I have a lot less problems with.
Any comments on the Assassins Creed game please? The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
Assassin's Creed has an 18 rating and is, as the name implies, about becoming an assassin (one in 15th Century Europe)...a more grown-up game than the Tekken's and Street Fighter's of this world..."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

my mini-Guns play AC on the xbox, and to be honest it's one of the milder ones

I can't see sometimes where the age rating comes from, they are in the main completely random IMHO. If you have issues over which ones YOU would/would not feel comfortable with, go along to a shop like Gamestation and ask them to show you demos of the games in action to help you decide.
One thing I DO take exception to is the level of swearing in some games. This is often the only thing between allowing ours to play or not, rather than the fantasy violence aspect. And for the most part, it's so unnecessary
I grew up with video games from the earliest Space Invaders when I was around 10, and it partly inspired me into engineering and computing (as someone else mentioned above), so they are by no means as negative as the media and politicians like to make out.
Also consider the benefits like improved hand/eye co-ordination, peripheral vision, hearing skills, problem solving, etc...."learing through play" I think is the buzz-phrase, currently a principle being adopted for early years learning in primary schools
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I have an idea that will help you decide
Have look at the game played on youtube here :-

People video themselves playing games...so there are loads on there if you type the game name in the search. I have to say, I thought of this while looking for something else earlier and coming across a pretty nasty video from that game where the guy was slitting womens throats from behind in alleys ...didn't expect that. Don't think you'd be impressed either would you?
Most games have something to see on Youtube..so it will help you if you have no experience.

Thanks for that, our Gamestation are really helpful so I'll go in this week and ask them about that. I was talking to a parent just now at school and he said the same as you it is the language that he objects to and pointed out that if they play online then the other gamers may well be using the language to match the game. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
