    wikipedia says:
Potassium bitartrate can be used with white vinegar to make a paste-like cleaning agent. It is a vital ingredient in Play-Doh and gingerbread house icing. This mixture is sometimes mistakenly made with vinegar and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which actually react to neutralise each other, creating carbon dioxide and a sodium acetate solution.

Thank you :A I've been saying this for ages and no-one believes me :o

Haha I believe mine was bought around 2003 time, how many tubs of cream of tarter are sitting in cupboards around the country with their bemused owners wondering what on earth it's for and why they bought it!

Now that's why my gingerbread house suffered badly from subsidence (My scaffolder husband shored it up to the hilarity of all). Never knew to look for an icing recipe specifically - thanks for this.
  • cream of tartar is also useful for making sweets- a recipe book my mum has uses either cream of tartar or powdered glucose in almost all of its sweets as it stops the sweets from drying out as much or something

    Yep I've got one! :rotfl:
  • I use it in gingerbread and other baking recipes ;)

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread so that you can see other suggestions.

Give all the cream of tartare to a local playgroup near you and tell them to make playdough - they'll be thankful!!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

You can also use it to make sour milk/buttermilk substitute - about 1¾ tablespoons to 1 cup of milk.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!
