To make baking powder you mix 2 parts cream of tartar to one part bicarbonate of soda..
  • mix half and half with water, dip a cloth in and rub on light switches to make them nice and clean (only think it works on white/cream ones, not metal finish)

  • Just been cleaning my kitchen cupboards and found a tub of Cream of Tartar BBE Nov 2004 lurking at the back of one of them  Can I still use it for cooking or can I use it for something else? Anybody know if it is similar to bicab of soda or should I just bin it (it was bought in a moment of sheer madness when a scone recipe needed it..... tried it once never again....)

Thanks a million for any replies

  • It's a raising agent (I think) and is one of the ingredients in baking powder. It won't do you any harm, but it might have lost it's oomph ;)

You can use it to clean brass, and if mixed with....you've guessed it...vinegar!!, it will scrub pots, pans, ovens etc. Bit like the old fashioned Vim but not as abrasive.

  • I have discovered a full pot of this in my cupboard. Not sure why I even have it, but it must be a few years old at least!

Not wishing to waste this, does anyone know of any use I can put this to? Does it possess any magical cleaning properties that I am unaware of (hoping for oven as mine is a state at the moment! :rotfl:)

I know that you can mix it with bicarb of soda to replace baking powder but I seem to have two pots of this in the cupboard at the moment as well lol! Other than that i have no idea what to use it for.

    Thank you all :)
  • wikipedia says:
Potassium bitartrate can be used with white vinegar to make a paste-like cleaning agent. It is a vital ingredient in Play-Doh and gingerbread house icing. This mixture is sometimes mistakenly made with vinegar and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which actually react to neutralise each other, creating carbon dioxide and a sodium acetate solution.
  • Woohoo maybe I'll make some playdoh! :T

I may mix with some white vinigar and attempt to clean the oven door, yuk
