british gas late payment charge!?!

British Gas start charging for late payments??? I just had a call saying if I don't pay my bill, I will get a late payment charge added to my account, wasn't specified how much, my account isn't overdue, and this is just a threat so far but has anyone else had this said to them?? seems fishy to me, but it wouldn't surprise me!!

as if paople arn't finding it hard enough paying for soaring gas and electric without this.

Surely late payment charges are good if it decreases the cost of the fuel? You seriously prefer the current situation where you pay more even though you pay on time and so subsidising all those dodgy accounts who do not pay up?

Why is this a bad thing?

Unless you are on a payment plan your bill will be due when it drops through the letter box. At different stages of non paying charges do get added to the letter. How many days is it since the date on the bill?

  • isn't it normal to get a reminder rarther than a phone call
  • I got a phone call today from a lady with Indian accent saying that if I didn't pay my bill today by giving my credit or debit card details over the phone I would be charged £14 late payment fee. I actually posted my cheque yesturday and she still wanted my details, said it was to set up Direct Debit and I would still get charged £14 late payment anyway. She also wanted my home number (rang on my work phone) and mobile number. Didn't give any details as I posted my cheque already. I was only a month overdue and I only got my reminder letter last week. Never missed any payments previous, just had some personal circumstances this month that means paying bills was not at top of list to do.

Do British Gas charge because i can not find anything on their website about late payment fees?

Remember, if someone calls you, they need to prove to you who they are.

Until they do, don't give them any information, and certainly no information about your gas/electricity account or bank/credit card details.

As a last resort, terminate the call and dial your supplier on a number you know is correct (not one the caller gives you).

Think suppliers have reasons , that been people treat them like trash and pay when they like if at all so have had to get tough. Think most expect payment on bill pay only within 14 days of bill date. Would you pay a credit card late?
  • Be very careful who you hand you details too. Never give information out freely unless they can prove who they are
