problems with AOL?

I've had AOL internet access for a few years now and in the last month or so have been losing the internet connection very frequently...every half hour or so at one point. Needless to say this is annoying. I get the message AOL has encountered a problem and needs to close. I assumed it was my computer as it's a few years old now.
Just now I had an AOL salesman phoning me. He said AOL has had trouble with the provision of internet access (customers' computers freezing up, etc.) and have now rectified it. They offered to send me a disc upgrading me to Platinum Broadband at no extra cost.
Sounds good till I asked if that meant signing a new contract. It does - for 18 months. I don't want to do that as the AOL service has been abysmal, especially now I know it's been the cause of the trouble I've had.
Has anyone else had similar problems?

Don't sign back up with AOL. I finally quit them last month after many years. I moved to o2, but there are lots of other providers as well who are cheaper and provide better service.0

what's the situation if you move away from aol as far as your email address (eg joebloggs@aol.com) is concerned ? .... there is literally hundreds of people & companys' who have my address and i couldn't afford to lose it / change it.
presumably if you resign from aol subscription you lose the address ?0 -
After many years of being with aol we have just changed to 02, so far so good.
We have been able to keep our aol email address.
Hope that helps

You can have AOL broadband without having to use their awful portal and software, just set it up to use your web browser like a normal broadband service.
Amazing that they want to tie you to a new contract just for fixing the existing problems, better to dump them.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
We are having massive problems with our aol broadband in the last couple weeks.
they told us to replace all the cables as they were faulty but it turns out they weren't.
we have spent days on the fone to them only to be told they are having system issues. and to top it all off boyf has signed up to another 12 month contract only a few months ago
ive told him if we cant get interent access we will need 2 go wiv sum1 else.
their customer service is appauling they told us we wud hav to prove we didnt have internet access in order to lower our bill this month.
ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH - I could scream (i am on wrk pc by the way-the internet is still not available!!)0
