The prob. you have is not with the police! My guess would be you have driven it about so if was problem with being stolen you are pulled immediately. If you have had it longer than a few months would say you would be OK.
Know there is a difference between english and scotch law but not sure what that is. Will give you insight into my dealership knowledge.
Really you have to find out who you met with! as you say on "a lease purchase deal" you may have met with the person that owns the company who leased it, who knows!! Does the name of the person/company match the name of the person you met? and di you see his ID? Really looking at this. You bought innocently, it is up to lease company to chase the company up that they did deal with. If company no longer running and Ltd then they have no chance. If in individuals name the company then they could chase his assets. You are innocent and by law you as an individual do not have to an HP check only a garage HAS TO do a HPI check! Keep yourself right and NEVER LET ANYONE take the car if they come to your door. Dismiss them and tell them to put any prob. in writing!!

ps just noticed your original post and you said you have been trying to get him for a month so car looks OK police wise! IF innocent party, possession is 9/10ths of law but def would not take to dealer until sort docs out!!
PHEW - was going to put PTO at end of that marathon reply.
