Three improving network coverage?? Cancel contract ??

Hi, I today received a letter from 3 telling me that in the next few months they will be improving network coverage, and 'London is next'. It also told me that due to this there would be periods when I will be unable to use my phone to make calls and access the internet for upto 6-8 hours!

I visit London regularly and I imagine some of you fellow people live in the London area too and may experience these 'down-times'. As I need my mobile phone for urgent personal matters that could arise at anytime, is it possible to cancel my contract free of charge instead of the recently quoted £528 it would cost me as they will not be providing the service I am paying for ?

  • I'm sure there will be a clause saying they may take the network down for maintainance and upgrades.

I doubt you will be able to cancel as they are not removing services permanently, in addition it is a place you travel to not your home address. I would advise if you do need a phone then take a PAYG phone on another network with you. If it is a 'real' emergency then 999 should still work as it would transfer to another network for emergency calls.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies
  • Calls and texts will be unaffected as I understand it. Only internet may be slow/inaccessible fro a period.

This map shows the areas of London that'll be affected by our network improvements; each phase of this work is flagged in a different colour. If you're in an affected area your service may be interrupted for a short period, usually no more than 6-8 hours. If you're a Mobile Broadband customer you won't be able to connect to the internet during this time. For mobile phone customers, calling and texting shouldn't be affected. However, Mobile Internet will be slower and some Mobile Internet services will be unavailable.

    No. Simple as that.
  • wow they try and make things better and all you can do is try and get out of the contract. It wont last for ever and im sure it will only be minimum disruption, give em a break!!
  • I thought if they were knocking out the 3 signal in those areas, the phone would just pick up Orange or who ever their 2G provider is at the minute. So you won't really lose any phone access... Only the 3G internet would be affected as 3 only allow internet via their own network.
