Well at least when the away fans start singing, "Who's the winker in the black?" (at least I think that's what they sing), you'll know it's me.
Are you feeling happier yet carolt?
To be fair, as you would only be an assistant referee, the song would probably be more like "Stick that flag right up your @rse"

What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach.

I'll be a qualified ref before the season starts and AIUI, the shortage of refs is such that they don't use many ARs.
If I do get a game as an AR perhaps a comedy flag that collapses would be in order.....0 -
I completed the FIFA level 5 refereeing course and passed the test yesterday.
Can you explain something to me.
The offside rule.
I understand the wording includes to gain an advantage from being in an offside position. I don;t therefore understand how an advantage is gained for example if a goal keeper kicks the ball from hand and the striker returns from an offside position, maybe 10 yards back onside to knock the ball on.
I don't see how he has gained an advantage from being in an offside position and returning to an onside position.
We see this all the time in professional football.:wall:

The offside rule is just about the shortest one and is now the most problematic because you can be in an offside position but not committing an offence.
You can't be offside if the ball is kicked to you by a player on the opposing team.
Quoting from Law 11:
"A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his own team" (my bold).
If he was offside prior to the goalie taking the ball it still doesn't matter. Once the ball is under control by the opposing team, we have moved on to another phase of play so the offside has been 'reset' (for want of a better word).
You could be 20 yards offside when a team mate strikes (this assumes you are not interfering with play at this point by blocking the keeper's view for example). Goalie saves and them accidentally kicks it to you. You shoot & score and I blow my whistle and it's a goal to your side and we restart with a kick off. You were standing in an offside position but not committing an offence by doing so.
Similarly you can't be offside if you're standing in your own half, behind the ball or receive the ball from a throw in, corner kick or drop ball.0 -

All very good and understand, but didn't answer the question I posed.
I'll try again in case I make it clearer.
I'm a striker standing in an offside position.
My goalkeeper kicks the ball in the air from hand.
I run back into an onside position (could even be into my own half, it's very windy
) to collect the ball kicked out from my goalkeeper.
No other player has touched the ball.
How have I gained an advantage from returning from an offside position to be involved in the play? and thus why is it deemed an offside offence?
I do understand the rule refers to the point of contact as in when the ball is played (in this case from the goalkeeper) and at that point I am in an offside position, just don;t understand how I'm gaining an advantage in doing so.:wall:

OK, I think I get it now.
If you are standing in your own half when the ball is kicked from hand you are not offside regardless of the position of the other players on the pitch.
If you are standing in your opponents' half when the ball is kicked and you are in an offside position at that time and you then collect the ball (regardless of whether you are in an offside position or not when you collect the ball) then you have committed an offence by being offside regardless of what happens next - by playing the ball you are clearly interfering with play. You don't need to gain an advantage to be committing an offence by being offside, it's just one of three deciding factors:
Interfering with play
Interfering with an opponent
Gaining an advantage by being in that position
If the pass had been from a goal kick rather than ball in hand you'd not be offside as you can't be offside directly from a goal kick.0 -

Nope, wrong poster.
Definitely not me.0 -
Thanks for all your lovely support.
I'm sure I know/knew all that stuff, not sure why everything got on top of me yesterday. Too many missed transport connections, all one after the other, missed by 1 minute, because the previous one was running late.
Must really learn to drive. Had my eyes tested recently. Now need to actually get round to getting the glasses, so I can learn to drive without any further hindrance than my total lack of coordination.
You're all so right. England is a great place to live. Lovely sunny day here. (Apologies to those in the north, for who torrential rain is apparently expected.) Must try to get an early night, less nights late on here gabbing would work wonders for my mood, I'm sure.
Hope everyone else has a lovely day too.
PS How did my thread turn into a football thread?
It's not fair. 0
