thanks for all your well wishes everyone...i survived:D
what a truly wierd day so hard to describe how i felt but i'll talk you through it for anyone about to go through it, it was very very straightforward. i think the hardest part was keeping my emotions in check..
my appointment was at 10am, we got there at 9.30am (my fault, nervous about being late)
i asked the reception lady what i should do 'i am here for insolvency' in a whispered voice....she told me that the counter opened at 10am so i should pop over to the counter then.
we went upstairs to a waiting room, on the way i had a little cry, the reality was overwhelming. calmed myself down and at 10am went back to the counter.
the lady was so lovely, she took my forms and cash and checked over the forms, thankfully everything was fine with the forms - the thanks for that must go to ALL OF YOU for your wonderful help :T
she told me to go back to the waiting area and she'd be up for me at 11am to see the judge.
the waiting area was packed full by this point (city court) my OH enjoying people watching. there were some interesting people there, all sorts. one guy was playing with his phone, testing his ringtones very loudly - inappropriate?! :rotfl:people were there for all sorts of cases, she was dealing with 7 insolvencies that day.
the lady came back for me at 11am (on the dot) and took myself and another man over to a court room. she went inside first and was in there a few minutes then called me in first.
the judge was a lovely man. he asked me how much i owed and how much i earned. i told him that i had reduced my hours at work due to ill health and i gave my before and after salary. the judge said 'well i imagine you can't even make the minimum repayments on the part time wage, i have absolutely no problem in declaring this, you're now bankrupt'. he scribbled on a few pieces of paper. then he said 'if it's any consolation, i think you are doing the responsible thing, there is no point continuing to struggle, go and get on with your life, make a fresh start, good luck' at which point the floodgates opened i managed to sob a 'thank you'and that was it. i was given a piece of paper with my br number on it and told i will get my offical br form through the post and a call from the receiver today.
receiver has just called, asked a few questions confirming address name date of birth assets etc then advised my case would be transferred to a different city for the telephone interview due to sheer volume, and would receive a time and date through the post.
i'm not quite sure what i feel - i've slept most of the afternoon, albeit not very well, i had a migraine after the mornings shenanigans, no surprise there.
people have said that there is immediate relief, that is absolutely true. obviously still lots to think about but the weight carried for the last 5 years has been lifted by the kind judge. he probably didn't realise it, but his kind words meant everything, as i've encountered people who thought i wasn't doing the right thing along the way, and obviously i've talked myself into and out of it over and over. plus he didn't have to say anything nice did he?
the experience wasn't scary, my app was at 10 i was out of there at 11.05am, 2 hours on the parking meter. the hard part was the turmoil in my head which was the fact that it was a 'big step' and all that had brought me there.
all i can say to others about to take the plunge is that it really isn't scary or complicated, the hard part is your own emotions. other than that, really straightforward.
sorry it's a bit rambly, thanks for reading to the end of this!
i know it sounds cheesy, but i really mean it, thank you so much to everyone who has helped me along the way with a kind word or piece of advice, you know who you are. this site has made a MASSIVE difference and i am so glad i stumbled across it when i did. i'll certainly be sticking round to try and help others going through it.
thanks lovely people xxx
p.s. i can't eat chocolate and i don't drink so it's chicken curry for tea tonight0 -
Hey well done confused!!
I'm soooooooo glad it all went well for you. Your post took me back to our BR day. You're right, it IS a big step, but once we've got to the 'point of no return' it becomes a positive step and just as your judge said, a step towards a new and better life.
All the best for the interview hon-that's another step on this road and then you'll really feel much, much better.
