I work part time for Tesco and after the end of the finicial year I got a P60 with my payslip. I then had to send this into the inland revenue, which I did a couple of weeks ago and I should recieve a check for the tax I paid in a couple of weeks.

The P60 is basically just a statement of how much tax you have paid in the last financial year.

yes, just add a covering letter saying you are claiming for over paying tax in the last tax year.

They first told me i should get a cheque in 2 weeks, they now say 4 to 6 weeks.

i'm waiting for a cheque for over £500!

Also they need originals so make sure you keep a copy

this is not true and is a common miss conception that students do not pay tax Everyone pays tax its is just that many students do not work enough to go over the tax allowance therefore do not pay tax. As soon as you go over that threshold yoou will pay tax which cannot be claimed back. Should you work less you will still pay tax but it will be able to claim back

Yea you do. I phoned the inland revenue to get the address as there website is pretty terrible for finding information on. Sorry, I can't remember what the address is now.

I'm going to be earning around £4000-£5000 this year. I know you have to pay tax on everything over £4000 (roughly, does anyone know the exact figure? and the %). What will I be able to claim back, is it if I get taxed on the money below £4000? I am a full time student (in year 12)

    Thanks

Your personal allowance (i.e. the money you can earn before paying tax) for the financial year 6th April 2006 to 5th April 2007 is £5,035.

I filled out a P50 form from the inland revenue website and sent it in to them a few weeks ago. I tried to ring my local tax office first, but it was constantly engaged..... I haven't heard back from them yet.... Any idea on what the time scale is for payment or whether I've done completely the wrong thing?!

It's not dependent on how many hours, it depends on how you earn in the financial year! If you earned say £100 an hour (and if you do I wanna know where you work!) then you will be over and get taxed.

I was usually taxed when I was at uni 3 years ago and I was only earning about £7-8 an hour and not doing that many hours.
