What happens to your credit after you port your number to a new PAYG network ?

I've lived abroad for a good few years and after returning, I just picked two Talk Talk SIMs for my foreign phones. Now I'm staying in the UK, I want to move to other providers. One will be going to Vectone (5p a min/sms) and the other to 3 (so I can use Skype on the go). The problem, though a minor one, is the credit balances that I have on the two Talk Talk SIM cards.

I know if I just took new numbers, then those SIM cards would sit there with positive balances for some time, perhaps a couple of years. However, if I port the numbers over, do I presume that CPW just pockets my cash ?

Can / do they allocate a new number to the SIM ?

I just don't know what happens in the UK. Thanks.

Once you leave all credit on the number is lost, sorry. . .

Best bet find a way to use it up before you port out.
