Kitchen Design

Options
A bit of background: -
1 The only access from the back of my property to the front is via the garage.
2 We are extending the kitchen into the garage but we obviously need to keep number 1 in mind.

I have roughly knocked together 2 options for the kitchen design: -
The design on th left means we have more kitchen space but have to go directly though the kitchen to get from the back of the property to the front.
The design on the right reduces slightly the size of the kitchen but keep access through the garage.

I hope the designs make sense.

Thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

    Hi david29dpo,

    Thanks for replying.

The other door (I presume you mean the one on the left) leads into the Hall way.

I suppose the questions boils down to - do people see it as an issue to go through the actual kitchen to get from the back of the house to the front?

If anybody has any ideas on how I could do it better then they would be appreciated.

Can you get to the front of the house from the hallway?

    Yes,

The bit I'm thinking about is if I every have to do any work in the garden and I want to take a wheelbarrow (for example) from the back to the front I don't want to have to go through the house.

In diagram 1 I have to go through the kitchen, in diagram 2 I don't (I can just go through the 'alley' I've left at the side of the kitchen)

I was just wondering if I'm making to much out of the issue. Do people consider having to go through the kitchen a disadvantage if they were purchasing a house?

Having lived in a house where we had to go through the kitchen to get to the other side of the house i would say definitely plan 2.

Gets down to how often you have to cart something , front to back .

The only thing I 'm thinking is the wheelie bins.

You are gaining a much better kitchen , but once a week a wheelie bin has to make that journey.

Could you keep the 'bin' /rubbish in the back of the garage

Don't know about in the summer?? but if the rubbish was well bagged.

Ps if you are not on wheelies . the likely hood you will one day

So on reflection , I go for Number one

Could you not do a version of Plan 2 which doesn't involve a wall between the kitchen and the alley? That way you separate off the thoroughfare from the working area, but the kitchen still looks bigger.
I write blogs about kitchens ... and I design kitchens for a living ... I just love kitchens!

Thanks for all your comments, keep them coming.

majjie, not a bad idea but that way I wouldn't be able to put any wall units on that wall (unless I'm missing the point)

There is a 3 foot (roughly depending on the depth of the studded wall and the width of the alley) width difference in the 2 options, in option 1 it's 12 FT 6, option 2 is 15 Ft 6.
  • Hey,

Sorry for off topic question - but what software did you use to do the designs? Looks pretty good....

    Cheers.
