Unlocking mobile phones

I was wondering if anybody on here could help me out? I have bought a new mobile phone on the orange network but want to use it on vodaphone, it was too good a deal not to get. Anyway, in the past when unlocking handsets I hagve a 20 mile drive to the nearest shop that does unlocking and they always charge me at least £20. I was looking online and there are adverts for unlocking codes for as little as £2. What I want to know is are they genuine, will they work or muck my phone up? And if they are real, does anybody know the best one to use as loads come up when I search.

Hoping somebody out there isnt as much of a technophobe as me

There are at least two Sticky's, right at the top of the front page for this board, that discuss this. You'll need to read the first few posts and then give more details about your phone. If it's a new phone it may not be possible to unlock it using a code though...
