Which is the best lego for a 9 year old

Hi:D my 9 year old loves lego but last year he got star wars and lego mission the truck one and they are in the box half made too hard for him and he has lost the enthusiam for it, I would love to buy him some lego for xmas but I want to make sure he can make it up, he has masses, all the free lego from the papers, the dinosaurs, lots of cars, lego missions, small packs seem to be better for him the larger boxes have so many intricate pieces I think he looses his way, what is everyone else buying lego wise?

  • If you go on the lego website you can search for products by age which might help? When I was his age I got the pirate set-it was awesome! and I don't remember it being too hard to build-but then my dad probably did most of it though lol!

    Hi,

What about getting him some bog standard creator lego rather than a kit?

My DS was 9 last christmas and he had Indiana Jones and Mars Mission stuff, possibly too much. He tends to build the kit once then create from his own imagination. Must admit he is a bit besotted by lego tho'. Its only the last few years he's been getting kits, before that it was creator or his dads cast-offs (technic).

Hope you find something that suits,

    T

I agree with Teresa. My kids do that too , build it then put it in box for own designs etc.
What about bionicles??? This is a specific type of lego that 9 yr old boys usually love ;)

My DS has some of the pirate lego sets - they are pretty easy to make up.

For christmas he is getting the lego garage (Although my 4 year old was desperate to get one as well!)

If anyone is interested - I have heard rumours of a 25% sale on lego at Toys R Us coming up sometime soon ;)

You can't beat the old lego sets, i had the hospital, fire station and police station that you had to build up a brick at a time, there were BRILL and kept me quiet for agessssssss xmas day - i have a feeling that if i still had the sets, i would still be playing with them now :o

Just a thought but the new lego power miners range is fab, the smaller models are around £3 per model and they are easy enough for my 7 year old to understand how to put them together!!

I dont know if it helps as my kids are 6 and 4 but were getting them the Lego City sets, we have the Town Plan, City Corner, Police Station, Fire Station and then some smaller sets. Most the age ranges are above my kids but we bought them in order to sit and construct them as a family as I dont think we've spent enough time in the last year doing things together. The kids absolutly love it when we all do something together and Lego is an interest that ewveryone shares. Also if you keep the boxes in good order and ensure the pieces arent lost then it is possible to sell them for a good price in the future when they outgrow them. I liked the Lego City as it seems to be the only one that they wont discontinue so will be usefull for collectors in ten years time. I also found a Hogwarts Train on sunday for my son to go with it as he is into Harry Potter and Trains. The rest of the Harry Potter sets seem expensive for there playability. The Police station in Lego City for example has escapable walls in the back of the prison cells etc which I think is very clever and good for the imagination.

  • My oldest Boy is 7 and likes Lego, but I think a lot of the Lego City kits are quite hard, and he soon gives up with them.

I have just bought him this from ebay:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300366206004&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

it is a box of just plain Lego Bricks (375 bricks to be precise), I also bought him a large plastic Tub of Lego pieces from Smyths Toy Shop, which had a mixture of bricks, windows, doors, trees, wheels etc and a Base, so he can use his immagination and make houses etc.

    Zippy x
