Thats what I think but how much does that cost? OH is always reluctant to phone a plumber because the last one we had to fit our bathroom ran off without completing the job.

Shop around....it could cost anything from a couple of hundred quid to £600+ if british gas get involved!

    Hi fyp,

We have a very old central heating system and needless to say it leaks and loses water pressure; when that happens the radiators don't heat up. The remedy for ours is to make sure the water pressure hasn't dropped too far. If it has then it's just a case of opening one of the valves until the pressure builds up to the required level and "hey presto" it works again.:j:j

I'll get OH to check to see if that could be the problem. That sounds less expensive than other options so may as well start with that (she says while typing with gloves on!).

I was thinking about the £200 mark, could possible stretch a bit more but not £600, we'd just have to make do! We just spent our last pennies on stock order for our business so cashflow is very low atm.

if its indeed a combi then pressure drop could be the culprit...

Sorry to sound as if I don't know what you're talking about but how do you check if its the pressure?

  • there will be a dial on the boiler with numbers, it shows what the pressure is at..

if its a combi boiler (instant hot water) then should be a little circular window on the front of the boiler showing a guage

    Yep it could be.

If it is acombi open cover to veiw gauges, One will be labelled pressure. there will be two pointer one which you van move by twidling the middle dial in the center of the gauge.

If the second pointer is below 1.5 you need to top up.

To do this turn twidly gauge to make pointer read 1.5 or just above.

Look under where pipies enter two of the pipes will have a flexi pipe ussually metal acroos them and it will have a little tap or valve on it.

If you touch one of the pipes it is attached to it will be cold, good sign.

While watching the gauge open the tap a little bit at atime. The gauge will shunt up above 1.5 and then drop to level itself out. keep topping up till it stays stable just below 1.5 and reset boiler. run for about thirty mins and recheck. You may need to bleed rads and retop as above.

    Hope this is some help.

We had a plumber come out and do this several years ago and charged £200. I learnt it at college. so give it a try first.
