Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to wait until OH can have a look and go through your instructions. I don't want to blow the house up - my buildings and contents insurance have both lapsed!

We do have a water tank and we also have an immersion that we never use so not sure if the water tank is for that when the previous people owned the house. Sorry - even the last plumber was confused. He said it is a combi but I'm not sure.
NM - the make is Potterton (prima f) and I have no idea how old it is but over 7 years cause thats how long we've lived here. Last time we had it serviced the BG man said there wasn't any point replacing it as it still had a few good years left.
