How do I connect my PC to a TV, without a TV port?

  • I'm here now.
Yep, poor picture, why not set the camera to macro, then you would get a perfect picture.

Going by what I think I can see you have a lot of dust there!

Two scart plugs and no spare sockets. To the left might be audio input phono sockets (sound into the TV). Then left again is the RF aerial lead.

The video input i.e. VGA is not present nor is any HDMI sockets.

Options. A scart to VGA lead in Maplins is £65 plus audio leads.
Buy a cheap monitor, or ask on freecycle for TV or CRT monitor.
    Buy a new TV.

Conclusion PC to old TV does not work.
  • Ok it looks like what you have there is the 2 SCART plus the left and right phono inputs (that's the red and white ones). What you will need for the image transmission is a VGA to SCART.
As for the sound, it depends on how the TV works - the red and white plugs are definitely for sound but I don't know if the sound will come up on the same input as the scart. You could try a 3.5mm stereo jack to RCA phono audio cable to connect the headphone output on the laptop to the plugs on the back of the tv, but I can't guarantee it'll work properly. If the sound on your laptop is OK, maybe you'd be happy with it coming out of there?

I'd post links to examples but I'm too new!
  • PS - there is also a possibility that your graphics card is not compatible with output to TV. The scan rate is different to a monitor, so it might not work at all. Also - don't go to Maplin for cables, they seriously overcharge.

Ah yes, lots of dust! I don't go out of my way to climb over to the back of the TV to clean it, no. :P

Is it worth taking a new one? I can't get to the back of it very easily at all.

We only just got the TV from a friend, we had been renting one, so no chance of getting another one. It would seem rude.

£65?! I was looking at ones for £6 on eBay. No chance of paying £65!

Perhaps I could just get the image up on it then and play the sound from the laptop. I guess I'd get used to it. Or just continue playing stuff on the laptop, I suppose.

    Thanks for the help!

Two scart plugs and no spare sockets.

The scarts are just DVD player/Sky box. I could unplug one to use it - that's no issue.

I have a monitor, but would have to get it out each time - I don't think that please my mum!

Here is a link to a better photo - for some reason it now won't let me post one? There isn't as much dust as it looked in the first photo!

    You washed the TV then...?

Right TV have 625 lines per picture frame and update 50 Hz (times per second) and use PAL to display two alternating lines (A in PAL) per frame. They also burn an image into the screen, don't forget that, not built for static images.

PC outputs at a min. of 72Hz, (different to a TV). It does not use PAL, but Interlaced frame (TV cannot show it). The line output on the TV is also at a different frequency, much lower than a PC (sync errors)

So a tv is not a good choice and would flicker and be poor resolution as well if you had a VGA input. 625 display resolution line to a PC of of 1024 DPI or more.

So any cable has to "convert" and stabilise and balance and sync. the signal, hence £lots for a box and leads.
    Really a none starter. Sorry

    No washing involved!

    Oh dear, that's a shame.

The adverts make it all sound so easy!

    What adverts??

Our PC's connect to the TV via HDMI cable that also carries the sound, if that was not present it would be the VGA input to use (15 pin BTW) and then an audio lead as well.

Just a though do you have a PS3 or XBox. These connect via RF lead (if present not looked ?) or scart and then you connect to the PC via wireless or cat5 cable via your router. C*ap picture doing it that way though.

Our PS3 also streams iPlayer from the built in software, it's not just a games machine and from the home server, again films and photos and music. Also should get internet radio on it. New one upstairs even has an Ethernet input for youtube and net movies!

I think they are PC World adverts, that mention connecting the laptop to the TV wirelessly.

Where would an audio cable plug into the TV though?

    I have a PS2, not a PS3.

I only really wanted to do it if it was a case of one/two cables or wirelessly, not through things. Thanks for the suggestions though.
