this is for people who have an ileostomy, [the surgical operation of making an opening through the abdominal wall into the ileum, so that waste can be discharged out of the body without passing through the colon]
waste is fairly liquid at this point and as it is collected in a bag positioned on the persons abdomen it can be embarrassing and adding this powder will turn it to gel,

seriously this isn't pleasant for people and freebies such as this may be rare, so lots of people applying for them when you have no possible use for them may cause them to be withdrawn

I guess it works along similar lines as the gel beads in nappies which swell when wet, or the ones you can put in plant ppots to swell up and retain liquid.
