I am being asked to assist in a lesson that I don't agree with!!!

I am not too sure if this it the correct place to post but could not find another area that I thought it would fit into.

I work as a technician in a food and textiles department at a secondary school, and enjoyed my job until September when a new member (this is their first ever teaching job) arrived and upset almost everyone except our immediate boss who thinks they are marvellous etc etc,. Having worked in both Textiles and food industries, I am not convinced. Well today they have said that they want to supply alcohol for our yr11 (16/17 yr old) students to use in a food practical - now before any of you jump at me I am fully aware that once cooked with you are left only with the flavour and no alcohol but this does not sit well with me and I do not want to be a party to it, but have been told that I can't refuse to help in the lesson - any advice would be a help

There is no issue here.
Just get on with your job as there is nearly 3million others that will do it if you won't.

If your religion forbids you from contact with alcohol you may have grounds to not support the lesson-if it's just because you disagree with the principle of alcohol around the kids then that's not your decision to make but the head of department or SMT's.

You cant be in trouble for supplying the alcohol - not sure why you are so worried?
I think there will always be personality clashes - it is part of dealing with people - you are expected to follow instructions (lawful ones) by your supervisor - otherwise refusal could amount to misconduct and associated disciplinary measures.

Sounds like a good idea, Kids should know how to cook, and know the benefits of cooking with alcohol, it improves every recipe its in.

Imagine spag bol without a glass of red chucked in = hideous.

Most likely explaination.

New Teacher is doing more and better work than all their colleagues and improving the department and the teaching it provides. All the old timers don't like the fact they can no longer do the minimum and are upset.

As for the lesson. Entirely acceptable and I hope if you refuse you are discliplined. Every student in that class will have done far worse when drunk.

What would be your position on using alcohol in chemistry experiments? It's a natural substance which has no intoxicating effect when cooked. Even my Mormon children eat food cooked in wine.
