  • I would not fit a flueless gas fire. They are death traps.
But if you want to get a gas engineer to fit one then remember you will need a air vent fitting and i would suggest strongly getting a carbon monoxide detector and having the appliance serviced without fail once a year.
If memory serves me British gas will not install or service these fires with good reason.

A flueless gas fire generally requires additional purpose provided ventillation (100cm2). This vent must be ducted directly to outside and you will find that draught and heat loss through this vent negates the benefit of a gas fire.

Go for an electric one is my advice!

Don't buy one to heat a room - flueless fires simply waste gas to look pretty. You'll get around 2.5kw from them - a proper gas fire will give you more than 5kw.

My parents were advised away from them from a family friend who fits fires.

We had one in the lounge, it was regularly serviced and we had a Carbon Monoxide detector installed for safety.

It is true you do not need to have a vent to the outside for the unit itself, but as other posters have said you DO need a good supply of fresh outside air to the room for the unit to work effectively.

And as we found, gas is not 100% pure, we had some soot buildup on the walls and coving over the three years our flueless fire was in and being used, so bear that in mind.

    Hope that helps! :)

Junk..........................How do these things get sold on the UK market? Are we downgrading our safety to European standards?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Where does the 'wasted gas' go then, bearing in mind it's flueless?

I think you may be confusing this with decoratative gas fires where much of the heat is lost up the chimney/flue.

exactly, WHERE do the 'fumes/waste@ go ??

One I saw said "100% efficient"

100% of 2.5kw is the same as 50% of 5kw.

SURELY there IS waste. There is no such thing as 100% efficient/perpetual motion...
  • They have built in catalitic converters. That is why you need correct vent is outside air and the burner pressures need setting to the letter, which is why i said they need servicing with without fail or they will soot up the catalitic converter and produce large amounts of carbon monoxide.
  • Why in God's name would somebody want to install a flue less gas fire. In Ireland you need not one but 2 vents on the same external wall, one high and one low. The flame pattern from a low input of approx 2kw is very poor, most electric fires have a better effect. Most gas professionals wont touch these fires in case they might be held responsible for the problems that seem to occur on a regular basis. If you have a chimney, stick with a good looking inset fire that DOES look realistic. If you don't have a chimney go for balanced flue gas or a wall mounted electric fire, neither of these need a vent.
