Ugh, Insurance  Hate it, such a monstrous rip off when you're younger. We've all been there (if you're male anyway) sadly. Its a sad state of affairs when the policy for young drivers costs more than the fine for driving with no insurance.

If you can bear it, get a parent to be the policy holder, with you as the named driver - it can bring premiums down a suprising amount.

Not ideal, but you could always try looking for older, even less desirable cars. Theres a certain charm about driving something monumentally shi**y when you first start out - think of it as a right of passage, allowing you to appreciate better cars as you get older! It may not be the case now, but older cheaper cars were cheaper to insure when I was first starting out.

And the most annoything thing is you know full well if you ever have to make a claim, the insurance company will do their very best to wriggle out of paying up - so be truthful on the policy, otherwise you may as well just not have insurance.

If you put a parent as the policyholder and do not declare the young driver is the main driver (If this is the case) you are commiting fraud and run the risk of the policy being valid, the policyholder (The parent) being prosecuted for insurance and having the policy cancelled which will make it very very difficult for the parent to obtain any type of insurance including home insurance for many many years at a reasonable cost.

For more information on the implications of this and people who have had major problems with this, it is called "fronting" try googling fronting or do a search of MSE for "Fronting"

    .

Do not do this. It is illegal and will render your insurance null and void. Not a clever game at all.
I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

What insurance group is the Fiesta? You really want group 1 or 2 to get started.

Go and play around with a few differerent cars and see how that effects the premium.

Be careful getting it insured in your parents name if you are the main driver (you might not be covered if your mother is fronting) but if you are at say Uni and onluy use the car when home then that would be the sensible option..

Any car will probably be over £1,600/£2,000.

Become a girl you'll get it cheaper that way....:rotfl:
I'm not really sure what insurance group it's in. I'm new to all of this. :o

So, I shouldn't put my mother as the main driver if she doesn't drive the car? I'd rather do everything legit.

Thanks for the further responses. :)

Agreed, but its not illigal if the OP is the main driver, adding a parent just as a named driver will still save them money

You can still add your parents to the policy just not as the main driver, it should still save you some money. As for insurance groups, this site will guide you through it,

Thanks, Kingsd316 and David, I entered my mum's details (with me as secondary driver) and I've been quoted £4.3k. Not cheap by any means but still more than a £1k saving! I also changed the annual mileage to 10k.
Change the mileage to 12K and see if it makes a difference.

Some insurers are cheaper with 12k while others are cheaper with 10K.

Also work out the largest excess you can afford to pay. Remember you will have a mandatory excess due to being under 25 and having your license less than a year.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I'd agree with adding your parent/older sister etc on the policy - but only as a named driver with you as main driver and policy holder.

Then it will just be a case of playing on the comparison sites with the loads of other cars - mainly group one.

Insurance premiums is just money down the drain - so personally I think you'd be much better off putting up with a bit of crap car for a few years and then you can spend the money you save on a newer one.

TBH though I think the FIAT is pushing it a bit though :rotfl:

Do an insurance quote with a 1.2 Clio or 1.2 Punto and you should be amazed at the price difference. (Maybe not the car though with a Punto!)
  • In all honesty as well some insurers will insist that the main driver and policy owner is the registered keeper of the vehicle. Therefore if you were going down that route of being on your parents policy the car would have to be registered in parents name as well.

I did that when I was at uni- I was on my Mum's cars policy. She used it during the day- I took the bus to uni or got a lift, I only drove to my part time job, twice a week or to the shops so wasn't a main driver thus avoiding the fronting worries. If you are a main driver at 18/19, I pity you for cost, but next time you see a muppet out driving a Corsa like a lunatic that is why the premiums are high!

    CORRECT!

    ALSO CORRECT!

Sorry chaps! I meant precisely the opposite of my post, what I meant to say was that you need to be the MAIN policy holder not the NAMED driver - the parent or whoever can be a named driver, you need to be the MAIN policy holder.

I do apologise, I blame overwork for getting named/main all muddled up.

    Sorry.
