phew! that's more understandable, I had imagined that you were crocheting SO tightly that it broke the hook when you were trying to put it through your item... Then I thought you must be one of those amazonian women to be able to crochet that tightly...:rotfl:

    Hi
Wondered how people are getting on with their version of the compact challenge. Have you had to put your lateral thinking skills to the test yet?
My one non purchase so far has been after my OH's elderly Aunt died last week I thought to look in my stash of cards for a suitable condolences card whereas normally I would just go out and buy one. I found one in there and it's been sent off to her family today.
I guess if one of us does come up against an issue that we can't think of a solution to then it's worth posting here incase someone else has a good idea?
Can I ask [sorry full of questions tonight:o] what can you use to clean the toilet if you're aiming not to buy anything new. I will still be buying an eco one for now but may be up for a spot of experimenting in the forthcoming months:D

  • Hi Airl!

Well, mine is going quite well beside my earlier blip last Friday. I am keeping a list of things I want, and I am finding that couple of days later, I no longer what the item, or have figured out another way of doing something without buying anything.

I clean my toilet with just vinegar. I pour about a cup down it, and spray all around, then leave it for half an hour (make sure you go for a pee first :D), everything cleans up beautifully :)
  • Here is something I've been pondering on for a few days and I am wondering if you lovely ladies can help me out. Over the weekend, we converted the TV area to a desk area. Now, you can see shelving on the photos there, and I'd like to put "curtains" up to cover the stuff up... I have fabric (well, I will find something from my stash) but I am not sure how I can attach the curtain to the shelves... here are some points of considerations:
    a) I would like it to cause minimal permanent damage to the shelves (and preferably the fabric)
    b) It does need to be secure enough that you can 'open' the curtains
    c) it doesn't have to be drawable (like on tracks), we're fine with just lifting the bottom to see behind it.

    Now, I've thought about:
    1) Stapling the fabric onto the shelves and then covering up with ribbon.
    2) Making the curtains extra long, then stuffing them under the records, so essentially, the stuff on the shelves keeps the fabric in place.
    3) erm, I did think of a third one but can't remember what it is now...

Can you think of any other way? I have the basic crafting tools & stuff, but no curtain tracks (would be too bulky anyway), curtain cord things nor the hooks you'd attach them to the shelves with.
  • Here's another discussion point (sorry, I think Aril set me on a roll)

What about free but brand new stuff? For example, Cath Kidson is offering their new spring catalogue for free, and for free delivery, but it's brand new.

Yes, it goes well with the frugal living (anything free is good!) but it doesn't go with the "not bringing anything new for green reasons"...

    but it's Cath Kidson....
  • Those stretchy plastic coated wire things that used to be used for nets and light curtains. The kind that are attached with little cuphooks. You can either make a channel in the fabric or attach some rings.

  • Would you have use for the catalogue? Is it available on line?

  • Hi
Sorry I haven't been around for a while.
I have really bad Crohn's and yesterday was a !!!!!!. Must have eaten something to trigger it off, as I have been OK for about 3 weeks now.
What does Cath Kidson sell? won't that just be temptation?

I know that if I lived in the US I would have bought lots of the fabric that it is showing in the book that I just got, to add to the half hundred weight of fabric that I already have.
I have decided to make some place settings for my sister as it is her Anniversary coming up, her dining room is a nice peach color and she loves the countryside and horses so that is an easy one to combine. Perhaps not the horses but defiantly the flowers and so on.

With regards to your curtains- I'd either the same as Alisonfunnel or perhaps you could screw some little hooks into the edge of your shelf and make thin curtain poles from either thin dowel or at a pinch you could use either garden canes or garden prunings if you have them [the ones from our buddlia are very straight] If you are using a lightweight fabric you could either make tab tops to them or ties that you can fasten in a bow to make it more decorative. Should then be able to open and close them [similar idea to the cafe curtains]

Re the catalogue. It all depends what you're going to do with it really. If it's going to tempt you then maybe not but if you're going to use it for inspiration then ok. I'm rather partial to catalogue browsing but then I get cross when I have to then declutter them all in the recycling! If you just want a Cath hit try googling posy blog- she's a huge fan and has done her whole house in that style but with many thrifty ways of doing it. I love what she's done but couldn't live with it iyswim
