Look, having been to the Keys on 3 separate occasions i can tell you they are better than St Augustine.
The beaches are small because the Keys are only small! That is their attraction.
If you go to the Keys expecting idyllic Carribean-style beaches you'll be disappointed, because there aren't any. If you want a lovely unspoilt, uncrowded beach (provided it's not Spring Break) in a pristine national park a couple of miles from the oldest city in the USA you'll love St Augustine.

Were off to florida in a few days we plan to spend 4 days in Key West then 4 days at Siesta Key near Sarasota Siesta Key was voted the 2nd best beach in the USA. We will be hiring a car so don't know how accessible these places are by public transport.
  • Sanibel/Captiva..

    Beautiful place to chill out..
  • Went to the Keys a couple of months back.
There are some good beaches if you know where to look . They aren't plentiful, or huge, or crowded!
    Here's a list of beaches -

    Bahia Honda - Was OK.
Sombrero beach - Probably favourite driving down the keys
Anne's beach - disappointing. Stopped 2 minutes then decided to drive on to Sombrerro

    Key West

The best, IMO, is Higgs beach.

Also went to Naples. Wasn't overly impressed by the beaches... not exactly Caribbean like there either...
